Volunteers needed for fall decorating

Things are starting to look a lot like fall at the Albany Chamber of Commerce offices as the time for the annual fall decorating of the business district of the town nears.

The Chamber is seeking volunteers to assist with putting up fall decorations on Saturday, Sept. 30.

“The Albany FFA kids brought the first load of cane to use with our fall decorations,” Chamber Manager Brandi Lehew said Tuesday. “I have also been working on fluffing up the bows and getting the pumpkin plaques out that will go up.”

Albany Chest applications due Sept. 29

Directors of the Albany Chest met on Wednesday, Sept. 13, to organize the 2023 fundraising drive, elect four board members, and vote on officers.

The deadline for organizations to turn in funding requests was officially set for Friday, Sept. 29, and the board’s next meeting will be held at The Feed Store on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 5:15 p.m. to evaluate the applications and decide on the fundraising target for the 2023 Chest drive.

Lions defeat Hawley in tough 27-14 battle

The Albany Lions put together the kind of defensive performance that will have fans dreaming big in their 27-14 victory over the Hawley Bearcats on Friday, Sept. 15.

The Lions (4-0) wrap up the nondistrict portion of their schedule at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22 at Comanche.

Girls to start district Saturday

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team completed its last full week before district with a pair of sweeps against Snyder and De Leon.

Albany (23-4) completed its nondistrict schedule Tuesday, Sept. 19, with a 25-10, 25-10, 30-28 home win over Strawn. Details will be reported next week.

The Lady Lions open District 6-2A play Saturday, Sept. 23 at home against Bangs.

“We’re just trying to get ready for district,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “We’re trying to stay healthy. I know there’s a lot of sickness going around.”

Spots filling up for golf tourneys

Spots are still available in two upcoming golf tournaments, both of them benefitting local seniors with scholarship awards.

Entry fee for the fourth annual Xi Chi Pi Sorority Scholarship Golf Scramble is $150 per team, which includes a fish fry following the competition. Tee time is 1:00 p.m.

The three-person scramble is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7 at Albany Golf Course.

In addition to a payout to the top three places, door prizes and raffle prizes will be offered.

JV Lions blank Bearcats 40-0

Jack Nail and Breylon Billington each ran for two touchdowns Thursday, Sept. 14 as the Albany Lion junior varsity defeated Hawley 40-0 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The JV Lions make their second home appearance Thursday, Sept. 21 (tonight) as the nightcap of a tripleheader with the junior high teams starting at 4:30 p.m.

Cross country runners place well at Hawley meet

The Albany cross country programs endured wet conditions Wednesday, Sept. 13, with nearly 30 runners hitting the course for the Hawley meet.

The teams will compete Wednesday, Sept. 27 at Dublin in their final outing before district.

At Hawley, five high school runners were joined by a bevy of junior high runners competing in their first meet.

Junior high teams post dual wins

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams made the most of their first home games of the season, with both seventh and eighth grade squads beating Hawley on Thursday, Sept. 14 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Cubs make their second home appearance Thursday, Sept. 21 (today), when they host Comanche. The seventh grade will start at 4:30 p.m. with the eighth grade to follow.

Lady Cubs play in tourney

The Albany Junior High volleyball program continued a busy stretch with three teams seeing action between Saturday, Sept. 16 and Monday, Sept. 18.

On Tuesday, Sept. 19, the Red and White teams played at Ranger. Those results will be reported next week.

All three teams begin the second round of the district schedule Monday, Sept. 25 at Abilene Christian. The Silver team will play at 4:30 p.m. with the White and Red teams to follow.

On Saturday, the Red and White teams competed in the Hawley Clear Fork Classic at Abilene Cooper.

MHS homecoming set

It’s homecoming week at Moran with several activities on the schedule.

This year’s homecoming will recognize the Classes of 1973 and 1974 for their 50th anniversaries and the Classes of ’98 and ’99 for their 25th.

During the week, students have taken part in dress-up days such as Favorite Jersey, Disney, and Crazy Hair. Thursday, Sept. 21 (today) is Spirit Day with everyone encouraged to wear purple and gold.

On Friday, Sept. 22, an alumni volleyball match is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., followed by an alumni football game at 7:30 p.m.
