The Albany Lions stepped up to meet the challenge Friday, Sept. 8 in defeating the Seymour Panthers 41-14 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Lions (3-0) visit the Hawley Bearcats at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15 in a highly anticipated matchup of reigning state champions at Forrest Field.

Against Seymour, Albany employed an overwhelming rushing attack and stifling defense to turn a close game into a comfortable victory. Seymour was down six midway through the third quarter, but the Lions scored on their next three possessions to pull away.

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team saw its winning streak come to a disappointing end last week, but wasted no time in starting a new one.

The Lady Lions (21-4) hosted Snyder on Tuesday, Sept. 12, winning 25-18, 25-9, 26-24. Details will be reported next week.

Albany has two matches remaining before the start of District 6-2A play. On Saturday, Sept. 16, the Lady
Lions visit De Leon with junior varsity starting at 10:00 a.m. The final nondistrict match is Tuesday, Sept. 19 at home against Strawn.

The fourth annual Xi Chi Pi Sorority Scholarship Golf Scramble is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7 at Albany Golf Course.

Organizer Lauren Peacock said 18 entries for the three-person scramble have already been received. The field is limited to 20 teams.

“If anyone wants a spot, they need to call me ASAP,” Peacock said.

Entry fee is $150 per team, which includes a fish fry following the competition. Tee time is 1:00 p.m.

The event raises funds for scholarships for Albany High School graduates. Peacock said the event has grown each year.

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams both pitched shutouts in their outings Thursday, Sept. 7, at Seymour.

The Cubs make their first home appearance of the season Thursday (today), when Hawley visits Nail Stadium. Action begins at 4:30 p.m. with the seventh grade game.

At Seymour, the seventh grade won 24-0 in an outing that lasted just two quarters. The eighth grade, playing a full game, won 36-0.

Coach Ryder Peacock lauded the defensive efforts of both teams.

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs volleyball teams got in two matches during the last week, getting caught up after the Labor Day holiday.

The Lady Cubs’ White and Red teams continue the busy pace, competing in the Hawley tournament on Saturday, Sept. 16, before visiting Ranger on Tuesday, Sept. 19.

On Thursday, Sept. 7, Albany played three matches at Bangs.

The Silver team won 25-22, 25-23.

“Charlee Patterson was our most consistent server,” coach Lauren Peacock said. “These girls played hard and did a great job as a team.”

Turnovers derailed the Albany Lions JV’s comeback bid Thursday, Sept. 7 in a 14-6 loss at Seymour.

The junior varsity makes its first home appearance Thursday, Sept. 14 (tonight) against Hawley on Faith Field.

At Seymour, Shawn Keen scored Albany’s touchdown on a short run in the third quarter after the Panthers took a 14-0 halftime lead.

“Seymour had a really good quarterback,” coach Rod Britting said. “He was elusive, could buy time, and throw the ball down the field. We had a hard time slowing him down.”

The Moran Bulldogs fell 48-6 to Aspermont on Friday, Sept. 8.

The Bulldogs (1-2) return to action at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Mullin.

Against Aspermont, Ethan Boykin scored on a 13-yard run in the third quarter after the Hornets led 28-0 at halftime.

“Our record doesn’t show it, but we’re playing well,” coach John Hughes said. “A bad break here, a bad break there is what’s happening with us.

Five Moran FFA students exhibited heifers last week at the West Texas Fair and Rodeo in Abilene.

Zech Henderson, Caleb York, Kacenda Thompkins, MaeKayla Kersey, and Landon Herrell all showed in the Other Registered Breeds division.

Herrell placed fourth, York eighth, Kersey ninth, Thompkins 11th, and Henderson 12th.

“It was a very good first show for our show heifer team,” Moran FFA advisor Minnie Denson Bennett said.

End Of Six Weeks

The first six weeks grade period for Moran ISD ends Thursday, Sept. 14 (today).

A ribbon cutting is set for 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Shackelford County Show Barn to give the public and involved officials a look at the recently improved facility.

The ribbon cutting is being sponsored by the Albany Chamber of Commerce immediately following the usual Friday lunch meeting.

The event is open to all residents, including donors, livestock show officials, county officials, anyone who helped with the project, or residents who are interested in seeing the upgrades.

Dallas resident Jason Harlow received a last-minute call in January from an Albany friend urging him to come out to eat and celebrate one last time at the famed Ft. Griffin General Merchandise Restaurant and Beehive Saloon before it closed.

He says he never could have dreamed where that visit would lead him.
