Bulldogs to open season Friday

After the one scrimmage of the year against Gustine last week, the Moran High School Bulldogs will get the chance to play their home opener on Friday night, Aug. 28 at 7:30 p.m. against Benjamin.

The Lady Bulldogs’ volleyball game against TCLA on Tuesday was cancelled, coming on the heels of a Moran win against Gorman on Friday, Aug. 21.

The next game will be at home this Friday against Benjamin, starting at 4:00 p.m.

Albany outscores Hawley in first scrimmage

The Lion varsity football squad made a good first showing last Thursday during a scrimmage against the Bearcats in Hawley.

The Lions scored three times to one during the controlled portion of the scrimmage, and they outscored the Bearcats 21-6 in the live quarter.

Albany will open the regular season on Friday at Robert Nail Stadium against the visiting Colorado City Wolves. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

Lady Lions open district at Ranger

The Lady Lion volleyball team suffered their first loss of the season last week against Jim Ned but got right back in the win column on Saturday in Eastland.

Albany opened District 6-2A action on Tuesday in Ranger, picking up a 25-17, 25-21, 25-15 win on the road, improving to 5-1 for the season. Details will be reported next week.

Albany scheduled an extra non-district game on Friday against Colorado City starting at 4:00 p.m. with the varsity. The JV I game will follow at 5:30 p.m.

Girls open with 3 wins, lose to 3A Jim Ned

The Lady Lion volleyball team opened its regular season last week with a string of three wins as they prepare for a long district run that begins next Tuesday.

Albany hosted Jim Ned on Tuesday, suffering their first loss in a hard-fought 18-25, 30-32, 14-25 match. Details will be reported next week.

The Lady Lions are on the road Saturday to Eastland for a full set of games slated to start at 10:00 a.m. with the JV II, followed by the JV at 11:00 a.m., and the varsity at 12:00 noon.

Lions’ only scrimmage set in Hawley today

Coach Denney Faith is ready to see the 2020 version of the Albany Lions in action, and he certainly isn’t alone.

The Lion football team will make its debut on Thursday (tonight) in a scrimmage match-up against the Hawley Bearcats. The JV will start the action in Hawley at 5:00 p.m., followed by the varsity team.

No admission will be charged but a 50 percent capacity ruling is in effect, so fans should be prepared for changes.

Haskell to host C-C meet

High school cross country runners are continuing to work out in preparation for the season, with the first meet set for Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Seven girls are participating in the daily training, but only three will actually be competing at the meets.

“I have three girls who will be going to meets, with the other four opting to run in order to stay in shape for other sports,” coach Tate Thompson said.

The opening meet is set for Wednesday, Sept. 2 in Haskell. Albany will run in the 9:00 a.m. heat.

Moran Bulldogs scrimmage Baird

The Moran football team had its first scrimmage of the year against Baird last Friday, Aug. 14.

Moran football coach John Hughes said the scrimmage went well, with positives and negatives, but overall the players did a good job.

“We have a shot at being competitive and making the playoffs,” Hughes said. “Our schedule overall has some tough teams and some teams we have to beat to feel good about ourselves going into district play.”

Albany girls start 2020 season with win

The varsity Lady Lions won three out of four scrimmages last week to start the 2020 season.

Albany hosted a set of varsity-only scrimmages against Lingleville and Benjamin on Friday, then traveled to Breckenridge for scrimmages against the Lady Bucks and Wichita Falls Hirschi on Saturday. 

The regular season opened on Tuesday at home with the Lady Lions defeating the Lady Bucks 25-23, 25-23, 25-17. Details of the match will be reported next week.

Lions suit up to prepare for Hawley scrimmage

The Lion football team is closing in on two full weeks of workouts for the 2020 season, with another week on the practice field before their first contact with an opponent.

The lone scrimmage of the season is set for Thursday, Aug. 20 in Hawley starting at 5:00 p.m. The University Interscholastic League is limiting all teams to only one scrimmage this season in an attempt to limit the spread of the -COVID-19 coronavirus.

The Lions have a roster of 46 players this season for the varsity and JV squads.
