The eighth grade Cubs posted a 46-0 win over Haskell last Thursday in the first home game of the season.

The seventh grade got to scrimmage for one quarter against Haskell’s combined team, since the Indians didn’t have a separate seventh grade team to put on the field.

The Cubs will play two full games at home on Thursday (today) against the visiting Anson Tiger Cubs, starting at 4:00 p.m. for the seventh graders. The eighth grade will play at about 5:00 p.m.

The Cubs started fast against Haskell, with Ashton Bailey returning the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown. Quarterback Branson Beal hit Dalton Richards with the two-point conversion pass.

Andre Gjerpe scored on a 38-yard run for a touchdown, with Richards taking the two-pointer in for the conversion and a 16-0 lead.

Beal scored on a bootleg in the next series, going 52 yards for the score. Beal then found Ethan Green for the two-point play.

Green got an interception in the next series and returned it for an Albany score, which was followed by the two-pointer by Lane Helle to boost the lead to 32-0.

The next score came with the seventh grade team on the field, with Helle scoring on a 15-yard run. Brody Oliver scored the two-point run.

The final tally was a 30-yard run by Richards. The two-point attempt failed.

Bailey grabbed an interception to end Haskell’s final drive.

“It was a good game all around,” coach David Fairchild said. “Ashton Bailey, Dalton Richards, and Branson Beal all ran the ball well.”

The coach also commended the offensive line of Landon Balliew, John Birkla, Lane Morgan, Ethan Green, Laithe Leech, and Hagen Miller.
