JV Lions pick up game on Nov. 5

The JV Lion football team will play in Tuscola Thursday (today) against the Jim Ned JV with a 6:30 p.m. kickoff.

The JV was originally without a game this week since Cross Plains isn’t fielding a JV team, but the substitute game was arranged by coaches several days ago.

Fans will have to purchase tickets in advance at the Jim Ned website: jimned.esc14.net. Use the “tickets” in the main menu bar and chose the JV game to purchase online. All tickets are $5 each.

C-C team to run at district today

Four Albany cross country runners are scheduled to compete in the district meet today in Anson.

Originally set for Wednesday, the meet was moved to Thursday (today) because of the weather, and will still be run at the Anson Golf Course. 

The varsity girls division is set to start at 10:30 a.m.

The Albany girls improved their times last week at the Munday meet, just in time for the district meet.

Lions face Santo in Thursday night game

The Albany Lion football team picked up its fourth straight shutout last Friday, entertaining the 2020 homecoming crowd with a 61-0 win over the visiting Ranger Bulldogs.

The Lions are now 6-1 overall, including a 3-0 mark in the District 8-2A  Div. II race.

Albany will be on the road this week for a Thursday evening game in Santo against the Wildcats starting at 7:00 p.m.

Albany to share district title with Hawley

The Lady Lion volleyball team traveled to Hawley on Tuesday with the district title on the line, suffering their first district loss in five sets to tie with the Lady Bearcats for the District 6-2A championship.

Albany fell to the Lady Bearcats 22-25,25-22,25-21,23-25,10-15 to improve to 17-3 for the season and 3-1 in district.

The Lady Lions defeated Hawley in the first district round in four sets, breaking the Lady Bearcats’ 79-game winning streak for district games.

Cubs roll over Ranger 34-0

A combined seventh and eighth grade Cub football team traveled to Ranger last Thursday, picking up a 34-0 win.

The two junior high teams will combine again this week to play Santo on Friday at Robert Nail Stadium. Kickoff is set for 5:00 p.m.

The Cubs opened the scoring against Ranger last week with a 40-yard punt return by Ashton Bailey for a touchdown. The two-point attempt failed.

Cross country girls to run at district

The high school cross country girls ran at two meets over the last week in preparation for the district meet set for Wednesday, Oct. 28 in Anson.

The pair of Briley Tabor and Brylee Moore ran at Anson on Oct. 14, turning in times of 16:08 for 30th place for Tabor and 17:03 for Moore for 37th place.

“The girls really struggled,” coach Tate Thompson said. “This definitely was not their best showing. I think taking last week off hurt them a little bit.”

7th grade volleyball girls end season undefeated

The seventh and eighth grade Lady Cubs volleyball teams have had a successful run over the last two weeks, with the seventh grade ending the season undefeated

The eighth graders will finish out their season with a game on Tuesday, Oct. 27 in Strawn, set to start at 4:30 p.m.

The eighth graders defeated Abilene TLC on Oct. 6 in two sets, 25-18, 25-21. The team also hosted Newcastle on Oct. 13, earning a 25-8, 25-12 win. The team beat Rising Star 25-14, 25-1 on Sept. 22.

JV blanks Stephenville freshmen

The JV Lion football team met a freshmen squad from Stephenville in Ranger last Thursday, and the Lions came away with a 28-0 victory.

The team will host Santo in a district JV bout on Friday at Robert Nail Stadium. Kickoff is planned for 6:15 p.m. following the junior high game.

Adam Hill opened the scoring with a 12-yard scoring pass from Lute Wheeler, followed by a kick by London Fuentes.

Caden Price got a tally for the team on a 14-yard run, followed by another PAT by Fuentes for a 14-0 lead.

Lions to face Ranger in homecoming bout

The Lion football team will be back at home this week to host the Ranger Bulldogs in a homecoming game as the District 8-2A race continues. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Robert Nail Stadium.

Homecoming was originally scheduled on Oct. 2 against Meri-dian, but even though the game itself was played, homecoming activities were postponed because of a spike in COVID-19 cases at the local high school.

Homecoming royalty will be presented during halftime of this Friday’s game against Ranger.

Back on the Court

The Lady Lion varsity volleyball team was able to get back on the court last Saturday for the first time in two weeks following a halt in their schedule because of cases of COVID-19 on the squad.

Albany traveled to Moran on Saturday as they restarted their schedule, picking up a 25-11, 25-9, 25-10 win.

The Lady Lions were also on the court Tuesday, earning a 25-9, 25-12, 25-14 win over the visiting Newcastle Lady Bobcats. Complete results were not available at press time but will be reported next week.
