Lady Lions still undefeated in district

The Albany Lady Lions had their way against a pair of Class 1A opponents last week in District 2-6A volleyball action last week, sweeping both matches in three sets.

On Aug. 31, Albany defeated Woodson on the road, winning 25-6, 25-8, 25-10. 

On Saturday at home, the Lady Lions dispatched Abilene Texas Leadership Charter Academy (TLC) 25-3, 25-4, 25-5.

Lions defeat Dublin 48-21 in delayed season opener

After an unexpected delay, the Albany Lions finally got to kick off their football season last Friday.

While there were some rough spots and miscues along the way, the Lions got things straightened out well enough to take a 48-21 victory over the Dublin Lions at Dublin’s Bob and Norma Cervetto Field.

Albany (1-0) scored on five consecutive possessions in the second half to take control after struggling through a scoreless first quarter. 

Bulldogs open season with loss to Benjamin

The Moran Bulldogs took their lumps last Friday in the opening football game, losing 58-6 at Benjamin.

The Bulldogs were hampered by four turnovers, all of which led to scores for Benjamin.

“Our youth showed,” said Moran coach John Hughes, who started three freshmen. “We did a lot of things to ourselves that we shouldn’t have, and Benjamin took advantage. Not taking anything away from Benjamin, but I think we killed ourselves because of our inexperience.”

The Bulldogs finished with 52 total yards. Connor Hail had 54 yards rushing.

Cross country runners compete in first meet Sept. 1

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions opened the 2021 cross country season Wednesday, Sept. 1 at Haskell, but results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

Albany coach Tate Thompson said four high school and four junior high runners were scheduled to compete.

Thompson said he approaches the first meet as a learning experience for his athletes.

JV picks up Stamford game

The Albany Lions JV football team pulled away in the second half last Thursday to defeat Stamford 18-8 in a hastily arranged game at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Lions were scheduled to play Colorado City, but the Wolves were forced to pull out the night before because of COVID-19 issues. The Bulldogs stepped in to fill the void for the Lions.

The JV is set to play Dublin at Nail Stadium tonight (Thursday), starting about 6:00 p.m. following the junior high games.

Jr. high teams start seasons

The Albany junior high volleyball and football teams opened their seasons this week against opponents from Woodson and Dublin.

The Lady Cubs volleyball teams traveled Tuesday to Woodson for seventh and eighth grade matches as part of a quadruple-header that included junior varsity.

Albany is scheduled to play at Moran next Tuesday.

The Cubs’ football teams open their schedules tonight (Thursday) at home against Dublin.

Delayed season opener set Friday

The Albany Lions fell victim to circumstances beyond their control last week when Friday’s season-opening football game at Colorado City was cancelled and ruled no contest.

Lions head coach Denney Faith said the game was called off less than 48 hours before kickoff because a coronavirus outbreak forced Colorado City to close school for at least a week and cancel all activities. Efforts to find a replacement opponent were unsuccessful.

The Lions will now open their season at 7:00 p.m. Friday at Dublin.

Lady Lions perform well in tourney

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team enjoyed a productive week, opening District 6-2A play with a victory and reaching the Silver Bracket final at the Buckle Up For Lane’s Sake Tournament in Nocona.

The Lady Lions played  their second district match Tuesday at Woodson winning in three sets 25-6, 25-8,25-10. Details will be reported next week. 

Following Tuesday’s match at Woodson, the Lady Lions will host Abilene TLC on Saturday.

Albany began the week at 14-3 overall and 1-0 in district.

Bulldogs to face ranked Mustangs this Friday night

The Moran Bulldog football team kicks off its regular season at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Benjamin Mustangs at Benjamin’s Ben Grill Field.

“Benjamin is going to be pretty good from what I’ve seen on film,” Moran coach John Hughes said. “They’re ranked in the top 20 in the state, so that will add a little bit of excitement to our preparations.”

The Bulldogs completed their preseason last Friday with a three-team scrimmage at Gustine.

AJHS teams prepare for 2021 seasons

The Albany junior high football and volleyball teams began preparing for their seasons with the start of the school year.

The Lady Cubs will be the first to compete, starting at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 31, with a combined match at Woodson.

The volleyball teams will visit Moran on Sept. 7 before hosting Abilene Christian on Sept. 13 for their home openers. That match is the only Monday date on the schedule.

The Lady Cubs are also scheduled to participate in in the Hawley tournament on Sept. 25.
