Baseball varsity opens season with 2 wins

The Albany Lions baseball team had the bats going Thursday, Feb. 23, opening the season with a pair of wins at the Brady tournament.

The Lions (2-0) return to action Friday-Saturday, March 3-4 at the Bonham/Bells tournament. Albany plays Bonham at 11:30 a.m. and Mount Vernon at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, then faces Rio Vista at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

Albany hosts Seymour at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 in its home opener.

At Brady, the Lions beat Mason 10-3 as Tyler Chapman and Caden Price combined on a five-inning no-hitter. Albany then beat Brady 18-5, sending 16 batters to the plate in a 12-run third inning.

“Overall, it was a good day for our first time out,” Lions coach David Fairchild said.

Against Mason, Tyler Chapman allowed two unearned runs in 2.1 innings, walking four and striking out three. Price worked 2.2 innings, giving up an unearned run with one walk and three strikeouts.

At the plate, Tyler Chapman tripled and drove in three runs, Zane Waggoner doubled and drove in two runs, while Coy Lefevre was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Cole Chapman and Will LeMay also drove in runs.

Against Brady, every spot in the lineup had a hit, run, or RBI. Cole Read drove in five runs, going 3 for 4 with a double. Lefevre went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBIs. Waggoner was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs. Price was 2 for 4 with a triple and two RBIs.

Cason Fairchild went 2 for 2, while Cole Chapman and Tyler Chapman each had a double and an RBI.

On the mound, Cole Chapman took advantage of good run support as the Lions scored three in each of the first two innings. The senior struck out six in three innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with two walks.

Read pitched one inning, giving up three runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out two.

Junior Varsity

The Lion JV team, which had some players fill in on the varsity on Thursday, went 2-1 in the Albany JV tournament.

Albany beat Eastland 6-2 on Thursday and Breckenridge 4-0 on Friday before suffering a 6-4 loss to Early on Saturday.

“I thought Calhan Fairchild, Mason McCloy, Will LeMay, Landon Balliew, and Brody Oliver all threw well,” David Fairchild said.

Against Eastland, Calhan Fairchild was 2 for 2 two runs scored, while McCloy was 1 for 1 with a walk and two runs. Shawn Keen and Jayden Kelly each had a hit and scored, while Landon Picquet had a hit.

Against Breckenridge, Balliew, Oliver, and LeMay combined on the shutout. McCloy, Calhan Fairchild, Keen, and Woods Peterson scored the runs. McCloy, Peterson, and Cade Fairchild had hits.

Against Early, Calhan Fairchild and LeMay scored runs. Peterson doubled and Jake Hale had a single.
