Lady Lions stay in district driver’s seat

The Albany Lady Lions found themselves in an unusual situation Saturday, having to come from behind to defeat Strawn in District 6-2A volleyball action at Strawn.

The Lady Lions rallied to defeat the Lady Greyhounds in four sets to improve to 22-3 overall. 

“We are now officially halfway through district,” Lady Lions coach M.J. Reneau said. “We finished the first half undefeated, and that’s the goal for the second half.”

Lions to face Olney in homecoming bout

The Albany Lions maintained their momentum last Friday, defeating the Anson Tigers 48-2 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Lions get one last tuneup before the start of District 8-2A Division II play when they host the Olney Cubs at 7:00 p.m. this Friday for homecoming.

Against Anson, Albany quarterback Cole Chapman passed for four touchdowns. Two of the scores went to London Fuentes, who also scored on a 65-yard punt return.

Lady Bulldogs defeat Rising Star

The Moran Lady Bulldogs volleyball team split its two matches last week, defeating Rising Star and falling to Strawn.

On Sept. 14, the Lady Bulldogs beat Rising Star 25-5, 25-23, 25-18.

“We only had six players,” coach Jo Hise said. “Everybody had to play every spot, and they had to be out there for every serve.”

JV Lions keep control in 28-8 win in Haskell

The Albany Lions junior varsity football team remained undefeated with a 28-8 victory last Thursday at Haskell.

Lute Wheeler passed for two touchdowns and a two-point conversion to help Albany (3-0) build a 22-0 lead. Branson Beal and Ashton Bailey each ran for touchdowns, while Houston Heatly and Cason Fairchild had TD receptions.

“Overall, I was very pleased with how our guys kept their composure and dominated on both sides of the ball,” coach David Fairchild said.

Jr. high teams pick up wins in Haskell

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams made their first road trip of the season a successful one last Thursday, both picking up victories at Haskell.

The seventh grade team improved to 2-0 with a 16-8 victory, while the eighth grade team won 32-0.

Both teams return to the road Thursday (today) with games at Anson. The seventh grade will play at 4:00 p.m., followed by the eighth grade and junior varsity.

Lady Lions undefeated in district play

The Albany Lady Lions took a big step toward a district championship Saturday by sweeping Hawley on the road in a key District 6-2A match.

The local girls hosted Rising Star on Tuesday, winning in three sets, 25-8, 25-4, 25-4. Details of the game will be published next week.

Albany will be in Rising Star on Saturday, Sept. 25, with an 11:00 a.m. varsity game time. There will be three games in Ranger on Tuesday, Sept. 28, starting at 4:30 p.m. 

Lions control field in 62-0 win over Haskell

For the second week in a row, the Albany Lions needed just one score to secure a victory. And for the second week in a row, the Lions were not content to reach the end zone just once.

Seven Albany players scored touchdowns, and the defense turned in another dominating performance last Friday as the Lions won their home opener 62-0 over the Haskell Indians at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

Friday’s Bulldog game cancelled

The Moran Bulldogs’ scheduled football game against Mullin has been cancelled because of a rash of illness affecting Moran players.

The game was to have been played at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Moran’s Bulldog Field.

“It’s not due to COVID,” Moran ISD superintendent Dr. John Denson emphasized. “The kids who are sick have been tested, and all the tests were negative for COVID.”

Moran coach John Hughes said players missed practice Monday because of the situation. The decision to cancel Friday’s game was made Tuesday.

Cubs end up with wins against Pipers

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams took different routes last Thursday in their games against the Hamlin Pied Pipers but both wound up with positive results.

The seventh grade team took the lead for good on its first offensive play on the way to a 36-0 victory at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium in its first official game. The eighth grade Cubs had to rally from a two-touchdown deficit to win 30-14.

The scheduled junior varsity game between Albany and Hamlin was cancelled because of a lack of players for the Pipers.

Lady Cubs win all 3 matches

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs volleyball teams had a productive week with the seventh grade team winning twice, while the eighth grade team won its outing.

On Sept. 7, the seventh Lady Cubs defeated Moran 25-10, 25-12 on the road.

Amber Miramontes led the team with 26 service points. Zayne Lefevre had five service points, followed by Tatum Grady with three, Charlee Hefner with two, and Hattie Braly with one.

“They all played well,” coach Ginger Norton said.
