Cubs sweep games at Hawley

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams swept their games Thursday, Sept. 15 at Hawley with the seventh grade winning 28-0 and the eighth grade winning 38-32.

The junior high teams return to the road Thursday, Sept. 22 at Comanche. The seventh grade will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with eighth grade and JV to follow.

Last week’s JV game was cancelled.

The seventh grade Cubs recorded their second shutout in a row to improve to 3-0.

Albany girls to start district play on Saturday

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team enjoyed another successful week as the start of district play neared, winning a pair of four-set matches against Snyder and De Leon.

The Lady Lions (15-7)closed out nondistrict play on Tuesday, Sept. 20 with a 25-18, 25-13, 25-11 win over Strawn at home. Details will be reported next week.

Albany opens District 6-2A play Saturday, Sept. 24 at Bangs.

Lions lose tough battle against Hawley

The Albany Lions faced a tall enough task in playing the Hawley Bearcats without two of their top offensive weapons, but field position was a determining factor in the Lions’ 26-14 loss.

Albany (3-1) looks to bounce back from its first regular-season loss in more than two years at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23 when the Comanche Indians visit Robert Nail Memorial Stadium for the final nondistrict game.

Bulldogs to face Mullin Friday

The Moran Bulldogs football team took a 56-8 loss Friday, Sept. 9 at Aspermont, but coach John Hughes said the team showed improvement.

The Bulldogs (0-3) return home Friday, Sept. 16 to host Mullin for homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

At Aspermont, Moran enjoyed production in the running game after finishing with negative yards on the ground the week before.

“We looked a whole lot better than we did in Week 2,” Hughes said. “We had better blocking and better running this time around.”

8th grade girls record win

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs volleyball teams split their home matches last week against Bangs with the eighth grade team recording its first win of the season.

Both teams are now 1-2.

Because of the Labor Day holiday, last week’s matches were played Thursday, Sept. 8. The schedule was juggled again this week with matches at Coleman played Tuesday, Sept. 13 because of a schedule conflict for Coleman. Details will be reported next week.

Against Bangs, the seventh grade Lady Cubs lost 6-25, 13-25.

JV Lions fall to Seymour 25-12

The Albany Lions JV football team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 25-12 to Seymour on Thursday, Sept. 8 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The JV’s scheduled game for Thursday, Sept. 15 (tonight), at Hawley has been cancelled. Instead, the JV will suit up with the varsity to provide depth after the varsity suffered a rash of injuries.

The next scheduled JV game is Thursday, Sept. 22 at Comanche.

Against Seymour, Albany had a chance to pull even after trailing 13-0 at halftime, but fell victim to three turnovers.

Russell medals at CC meet

The Albany Lions and Lady Lions cross country runners made their second outing of the season Tuesday, Sept. 6 at Eula.

The runners returned to competition Wednesday, Sept. 14 at Hawley. Results will be reported next week.

At Eula, Albany had four runners in the varsity boys race, two in varsity girls and three in JV girls.

“We are are starting to prepare for midseason now,” coach Ginger Norton said. “The runners are preparing for the next three meets before district on Oct. 12 at Anson. Most of the runners are improving on their times.”

Jr. high splits Seymour games

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams split their games against Seymour on Thursday, Sept. 8, with the seventh grade winning 24-0 and the eighth grade losing 14-6.

The Cubs make their first road trip of the season on Thursday, Sept. 15 (today) when they visit Hawley. The seventh grade game will start at 4:00 p.m. with the eighth grade to follow.

Bennett Neece scored twice, capping long drives, and Clay Chapman added a touchdown as the seventh grade Cubs improved to 2-0.

Lady Lions record 3 straight wins

The Albany Lady Lions volleyball team enjoyed a 2-0 week last week, beating Benjamin and Tolar, as preparations for district intensified.

The Lady Lions (13-7) began their last full week of nondistrict play Tuesday, Sept. 13, with a hard-fought win, 25-23, 28-26, 27-29, 25-15, at Snyder. Details will be reported next week.

On Saturday, Sept. 17, Albany will host De Leon.

On Tuesday, Sept. 6, the Lady Lions rallied to defeat Benjamin 17-25, 28-25, 25-20, 25-16 at Benjamin.

Injuries plague Lions in tough 27-13 win

Probably the best thing about Albany’s 27-13 victory at Seymour last week was the Lions had 11 healthy players on the field at the end.

A depleted Albany squad returns home after two games on the road to host Hawley at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.
