Jr. high to host Roscoe

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams swept their games Thursday, Oct. 13 at Cross Plains with the seventh grade winning 26-14, while the eighth grade won 28-20.

The Cubs return home to face Roscoe on Thursday, Oct. 20 (tonight). The seventh grade game will kick off at 4:30 p.m. with the eighth grade to follow.

At Cross Plains, Clay Chapman threw three touchdown passes and had two interceptions on defense, returning one for a score, as the seventh grade Cubs remained undefeated at 6-0.

Hargis starts 35th year as multi-season ref

Ronnie Hargis, who spent his childhood in Albany, was recently honored by the Texas High School Basketball Officials Association for being selected to officiate games at the University Interscholastic League state basketball tournament last March.

Hargis, who now lives in Hawley, was one of six association members recognized on Sept. 21.

JV Lions pull off 28-6 win over Cross Plains

The Albany Lions junior varsity football team scored on offense, defense and special teams Thursday, Oct. 13 in a 28-6 victory at Cross Plains.

The JV Lions (4-3) were left without a game this week against Roscoe, but efforts were ongoing to find a replacement opponent. The team’s final game will be Thursday, Oct. 27 against Hamlin at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

At Cross Plains, Albany pulled away to defeat the Buffaloes for the second week in a row.

2 cross country runners advance to regional

Albany’s Briley Tabor and Jonathan Coody qualified for regional competition with their performances at the District 6-2A cross country meet Wednesday, Oct. 12 at Anson.

The pair will compete at the Region II-2A meet on Monday, Oct. 24 at Grand Prairie’s Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake. The girls race is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. with the boys at 12:40 p.m.

The Athletic Booster Club has scheduled a send-off at the Bank Park downtown on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 10:30 a.m.

Golf tourney raises funds

The foursome of Randy Walker, Rodney Barton, Charles Barrett, and James Waters claimed a four-stroke victory Friday, Oct. 14 in the 15th annual John Rose and Jim Law Memorial Albany Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament and Fajita Fiesta at Albany Golf Course.

The quartet carded a score of 53 to top the 10-team field. Teams representing API and First Financial Bank tied for second place at 57.

The event benefits the Albany K Charity Scholarship Fund. Kiwanian Zach Maberry reported approximately $9,000 was raised.

Lady Lions keep district record clean

The Albany Lady Lions continued to remain atop the District 6-2A volleyball standings by sweeping Bangs and beating Coleman, extending their winning streak to 12 after Tuesday night’s matches.

The Lady Lions (22-7 overall, 6-0 district) began the stretch drive Tuesday, Oct. 18, with a 28-26, 15-25, 25-17, 25-18 at Coleman. Details will be reported next week.

Albany hosts Hawley on Saturday, Oct. 22 before concluding the regular season Tuesday, Oct. 25, at Ranger.

Albany scores big homecoming victory

The Albany Lions enjoyed a happy homecoming Friday, Oct. 14, defeating Cross Plains 56-0 at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

The Lions (5-2 overall, 2-0 District 6-2A) visit the Roscoe Plowboys at 7:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 in a showdown for sole possession of first place in the district standings.

Albany got some very good news when quarterback Cole Chapman, who has missed four games, was cleared to practice this week. Lions head coach Denney Faith said Chapman’s availability for Roscoe is to be determined.

Lady Bulldogs lose district match

The Moran Lady Bulldogs suffered a pair of three-set losses last week as the schedule finally reached district play.

The Lady Bulldogs played their second district match Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Rising Star. Results will be reported next week.

On Saturday, Oct. 15, Moran visited Trent for a nondistrict match.

The Lady Bulldogs then lost to Abilene TLC 11-25, 10-25, 25-27 at home on Tuesday, Oct. 4.

“We came together in that last set and played ball like we know how to play ball,” coach Jo Hise said.

Bulldogs end with positive yardage

The Moran Bulldogs took some steps in the right direction Friday, Oct. 7 but fell 64-16 at Vernon Northside in their final nondistrct game.

The Bulldogs (0-7) have their open date this week before starting District 14-1A Division II play Friday, Oct. 21 at home against Valera Panther Creek.

Flag football teams continue play

The Albany NFL Flag Football League nears the halfway point of its season this week with just two teams sporting unblemished records after two weeks of play.

Week 3 games start at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Albany High School track infield.

Week 2 saw competitive games with four of six contests decided by a touchdown or less.

The Cowboys lead the Kindergarten-First Grade Division and the Broncos sit atop the Fourth-Sixth Grade division, both at 2-0. All other teams have at least a tie.
