Tennis team plays in Vernon

Albany’s Sidney Russell claimed her second tournament title of the spring Monday, March 4, winning the girls singles draw at Vernon.

The Albany tennis program will be off through spring break, returning to action Thursday, March 28 at Abilene High.

The Abilene Christian tournament, scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 29, was cancelled because of inclement weather.

Albany had just four entries totaling six players at the Vernon tournament as severalteammemberswere involved in One-Act Play.

“I love going to Vernon,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “They have 10 courts, and we got to see a lot of teams from that area we don’t normally see. We got to play some big-school JVs and got some great competition.”

In addition to Russell, Hattie Braly also competed in girls singles. Christian Hernandez and Woods Peterson played boys doubles, while Mimi Ivy and Jaxson Street played mixed doubles.

Both doubles teams won a match before being eliminated.

Girls Singles

Sidney Russell defeated VernonNorthside8-0;defeated VernonNorthside8-2;defeated Vernon 8-0 in the semifinals; defeated Abilene High 8-3 in the finals.

Hattie Braly lost to Chillicothe 0-8; lost to Vernon Northside 3-8.

Boys Doubles

Christian Hernandez and Woods Peterson defeated Petrolia 8-3; lost to Abilene High 5-8.

Mixed Doubles

Mimi Ivy and Jaxson Street defeated Petrolia 8-4; lost to Abilene High 0-8.
