This September Kenzie Fairchild’s culinary arts class traveled to a local apiary to learn about harvesting honey, and recently they completed the project by bottling some of the sweet golden liquid they had collected.

The bee hives are owned by Tamara Trail’s family, and are located at various places on the Trails’ ranch.

“My father-in-law manages the bees, and feeds them through the winter,” said Trail. “He harvested all the supers and brought them to the barn for us.”

The Lion varsity football team delighted a large homecoming crowd last Friday with a decisive 48-12 victory over Baird, also breaking into the win column for the first time this season in the district opener.

Albany (1-5, 1-0) will travel to Roscoe (2-4, 0-1) this week as the District 7-2A race continues. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.

The Plowboys opened district last Friday with a 50-21 loss to Hamlin, but have two pre-district wins over Munday and Miles while dropping games to Hawley, Gruver, and Stamford.

Downtown merchants will host their annual trick-or-treat event on Halloween.

Store owners hold the event to offer a safe place for local students and pre-schoolers to make their Halloween rounds.

Children can visit participating stores from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31 with merchants providing candy and other treats.

Groups will also be at the Bank Park, according to Albany Chamber of Commerce office manager Mary Beth Jones.

The Shackelford County Law Enforcement Center will be welcoming trick or treaters that day as well.

With the district race winding down, the Lady Lions volleyball team split games over the last week with just two regular season bouts remaining.

Albany will be at home for the final pair of District 6-2A games, with Woodson coming to town Saturday for a 10:00 a.m. game. The last regular season game is set for next Tuesday, Oct. 23 against Ranger in a parents night finale starting about 6:00 p.m. after the JV bout.

In spite of all the recent rain, as of press time on Tuesday the Albany Golf Club annual membership meeting and Championship Golf Tournament is still set to take place as planned at the local golf course this weekend, Oct. 20 and 21.

“We haven’t changed it yet,” said organizer Randy Walker earlier this week. “Maybe we won’t have to.”

The event begins with a hamburger meal at 12:00 noon on Saturday, and a business meeting.

Directors and officers will be selected, and then the players will tee off at 1:00 p.m.

Although none of Albany High School’s cross country runners will advance to the regional meet, several local junior high runners medalled at last week’s district competition.

Included in that elite group are eighth grader Isaiah Carrillo, who came in second among all junior high boys at district after medalling at every meet he participated in this season.

Other medalists were Cason Fairchild, Lute Wheeler, and Ashlyn Holson.

The district meet was held Wednesday, Oct. 10 in Haskell.

The Junior Garcia Memorial Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27.

“The golf course was already too wet, and more rain was expected on Saturday, so everything was postponed until Oct. 27,” said organizer James Sanders. “We hope everyone can still make it.”

Golfers that can not fit the rain-out date into their schedules can contact Sanders at 325-201-4770 if they need a refund on their entry fee.

“We will have the meal and auction, along with live music after the tournament,” said Sanders. “The raffle drawing will also be held on Oct. 27.”

The junior high volleyball teams were busy last week with a tournament in Graham, as well as games at Wylie on Monday.

The 7B also played in Moran on Tuesday, but results were not available at press time.

Albany will host both seventh and eighth grade games on Monday against Ranger starting at 4:30 p.m. to close out the season.

The seventh grade girls won two out of three matches at the Graham tournament to earn the runner-up spot.

Two teams of elementary aged volleyball players from Albany played in a youth league based in Breckenridge this fall, and both squads won top medals in their division.

“Both teams went 9-1 in regular season and ended up at the top of the league in their age groups,” said coach Lindsey Edgar. 

The Albany Aces also won last weekend’s tournament in each of their age divisions.

The Albany Cubs picked up a pair of games last week in Stamford, bringing home a shutout and tie.

The Cubs were scheduled to host Roscoe on Thursday, but since the Plowboys have a turf field, the games will probably be moved to Roscoe starting at 4:00 p.m. with the seventh grade. The eighth graders will follow at about 5:15 p.m. 

Also, the JV was originally scheduled to play Roscoe, but the Plowboys can’t put a JV team on the field due to injuries, and the Albany JV will instead play Post in Roscoe about 6:15 p.m. after the eighth grade game.
