Albany News

The Albany Cubs picked up a pair of games last week in Stamford, bringing home a shutout and tie.

The Cubs were scheduled to host Roscoe on Thursday, but since the Plowboys have a turf field, the games will probably be moved to Roscoe starting at 4:00 p.m. with the seventh grade. The eighth graders will follow at about 5:15 p.m.

Also, the JV was originally scheduled to play Roscoe, but the Plowboys can’t put a JV team on the field due to injuries, and the Albany JV will instead play Post in Roscoe about 6:15 p.m. after the eighth grade game.

Last Week’s Games

The seventh grade Cubs blanked Stamford 32-0 last Thursday in Stamford.

Cason Fairchild got the scoring spree started with an 18-yard touchdown run, followed by a two-point pass from Fairchild to Bryson Herring.

Lanxton Viertel scored the first of three tallies on a 25-yard run up the middle to give the Cubs a 14-0 lead at the half. The conversion attempt failed.

The Cubs stopped Stamford in the third period, taking over the ball for Viertel to break loose for a 68-yard scoring run.

Houston Heatly came up with a loose Stamford ball to end the next Bulldog drive. Tyler Chapman punched the ball in from five yards out for the next score.

On the following Stamford drive, Viertel intercepted a pass and returned the ball 30 yards for his third score of the game.

“Offensively, we ran and passed the ball well,” coach Ryder Peacock said. “We went to the air early as we continue to work on our timing and routes. I’m really pleased with how well the guys are coming along, both running and passing.”

The coach also commended the defense for getting another shutout.

“A shutout is always our goal, and we were able to get a few turnovers and made some big defensive stops,” the coach continued.

Peacock commended Viertel for playing well on both sides of the ball.

“I thought the offensive line blocked well and our receivers did a good job of not only catching the ball, but also blocking down field to allow some of our biggest runs of the season,” said Peacock.

8th Grade Ties

The eighth grade Cubs ended up with a 22-22 tie with the Bulldogs.

“Even though that wasn’t the outcome we were after, there were several bright spots throughout a true back and forth game with a lot of big plays,” coach Richard Sullivan said. “In the end, it was a very hard-fought battle where neither team came out ahead.”

The coach said that overcoming adversity played a big role in the game.

“The momentum constantly switched sides, not giving either team a clear advantage,” the coach said. “Overall, we played well, battled hard and made a good showing against a good Bulldog team.”

Caden Price scored on a five-yard run, and also ran in the two-pointer to knot the score at 8-8.

Samuel Rosas scored on a three-yard run, which was followed by a two-point pass from London Fuentes to Price.

Price scored again on a 20-yard run to put the Cubs up 22-14. The conversion attempt failed.

Defensive standouts named by the coach were Andrew Leverton, Price, and Clay Green.

Offensive standouts were Fuentes, Price, and Keatin Russell.

Green was also credited with an interception for the Cubs.
