The Albany High School tennis team advanced three of six entries to state at the Region II-2A tournament, which concluded Tuesday, April 11 at Richland Tennis Center in North Richland Hills.
Sarah Cotter, last year’s girls singles state runnerup, returned to state by defeating teammate Sidney Russell in the final. Luke Marshall won the boys singles title to advance.

Moran track and field teams continued preparing for district competition by competing March 31 at the Tiger Relays in May.
The Lady Bulldogs finished sixth in the girls team standings with 58 points, winning five events,while the boys team tied for 14th place with two points.
“Overall, we’re extremely pleased with the results from this meet,” coach John Hughes said. “Going and running in the bigger meets the past three weeks worked in our favor.”

Albany hosted the District 10-2A junior high track and field meet Saturday, April 2, taking on athletes from Anson, Cisco, Hamlin, Haskell, Hawley, and Stamford.
The Cubs placed fourth in the eighth grade boys division with 74 points and tied for third in the seventh grade boys division with 93 points.
The Lady Cubs placed fifth in the eighth grade girls team standings with 60 points and second among seventh grade girls with 84 points.

Afternoon golf scrambles will get underway on Wednesday, April 13 at the Albany Municipal Golf Course, according to Albany Golf Club officer Randy Walker.
He encouraged participants to be at the course and signed up by 5:15 p.m., with play scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Entry fees are $10 for club members and $15 for non-members.

The Albany Lady Lions split two games last week to wrap up the first half of the District 8-2A softball schedule.
On Tuesday, March 29, the Lady Lions dropped a 7-6 decision to Cisco at Webb Park, then bounced back to defeat Gorman 20-1 in four innings on Friday, April 1.
Albany started the second round of district play Tuesday, April 5, with a 18-9 victory at Cross Plains. Details will be reported next week.

The Albany Lions golf team put itself in contention for a return to regional competition Monday, April 4, sitting in second place after the first round of the District 10-2A tournament at Shady Oaks Golf Course.
Albany shot 346 as a team with four scores in the 80s to trail Hawley by eight strokes. Haskell was third, three strokes back of the Lions.
“It will be to our advantage to play two rounds,” coach Tate Thompson said. “I think our kids will come back and put together a good second day.”

The Albany Lions baseball team had one comeback fall short but completed another last week in splitting their two District 8-2A outings.
The Lions lost 13-11 to third-ranked Anson on Tuesday, March 29 on the road, then beat Cisco 7-2 on Friday, April 1 at home.
The Lions (8-3 overall, 3-1 district) completed the first half of district play Wednesday, April 6 at Hawley in a game postponed one day because of wet field conditions. Details will be reported next week.

Albany tuned up for district track competition March 31 by winning the boys team title at the Wildcat Relays in Santo.
The local boys scored 140 points to top the field of 14 teams, winning seven events, including two relays.
“We had a good meet overall,” coach Rod Britting said. “The jumpers did well, and Cole Chapman had a really good day.”
The Lions will compete at the District 10-2A meet Friday, April 8 at Cisco. The top four finishers in each event advance to the area meet with District 9-2A on Thursday, April 14 at Graham.

The Albany Lions tennis team added three more regional qualifiers in two categories Friday, April 1 by winning playbacks at the District 10-2A tournament at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene, bringing the total to nine individuals.
Albany will have at least one entry in each draw for the Region II-2A tournament, which is scheduled for Monday-Tuesday, April 11-12 at Richland Tennis Center in North Richland Hills. Five of those entries are repeat regional qualifiers.

Moran’s Alli Scott was the high-point girl Saturday, March 26 at the Buckaroo Relays in Breckenridge.
Scott scored 34 points, putting Moran sixth in the girls team standings.
Scott won the 100 hurdles in 16.75 seconds and finished second in the 300 hurdles (51.30), high jump (5-0), and long jump (15-0½).
Moran had five girls and five boys competing at the meet.
“I was proud of the work they put in,” coach John Hughes said. “We were the only 1A school there.”
