Jr. high tennis teams dominate recent district meet

Members of the Albany Junior High tennis claimed three division titles and another 10 top four finishes last week at the junior high district tournament at Abilene’s Rose Park Tennis Center.

In the girls competition on Monday, May 2, the Lady Cubs swept the top three spots in seventh grade doubles. Zayne Le­fevre and Amber Miramontes won the title, defeating teammates Charlee Hefner and Hattie Braly in the final, while Tatum Grady and Ashlyn Miller finished third.

In eighth grade doubles, Albany finished second, third and fourth. Mimi Ivy and Caroline Chapman reached the championship match, while Alli McDaniel and Jayden Kelly defeated Braylee Clark and Kaisley Bartee for third place.

Eighth grader Cheyenne Hebel was Albany’s only singles entry at either grade level. Also competing were Rashelle Sanchez and Brooke Richards in seventh grade doubles and Paisley Clark and Madison Parrott in eighth grade doubles.

On Tuesday, May 3, the Cubs took the court, winning two titles. Cade Fairchild won in eighth grade singles, while Calhan Fairchild and Huffman Heatly defeated teammates Woods Peterson and Mason McCloy in the eighth grade doubles final. Brody Oliver and Lane Helle finished fourth in doubles.

In the seventh grade division, Christian Hernandez finished second, and Casey Estridge finished third in singles, while Connor Smith and Britton Farmer finished third in doubles.

Other Albany entries were Landon Picquet and Cache Clark in eighth grade singles and Shooter Shoaf and Judson Rogers in seventh grade doubles.

EIGHTH GRADE

Singles

Cheyenne Hebel lost to Bailey Stalling, Hawley, 6-4 in the first round.

Doubles

Mimi Ivy and Caroline Chapman defeated Cantu-Terry, Stamford, score not reported, in the first round; defeated Hobbs-Lewis, Hawley, 6-1 in the quarterfinals; defeated Braylee Clark-Kaisley Bartee, Albany, 6-3 in the semifinals; lost to Balch-Wright, Hawley, 6-3 in the final to finish second.

Braylee Clark and Kaisley Bartee had a bye in the first round; defeated Roberts-Holmes, Stamford, 6-2 in the quarterfinals; lost to Mimi Ivy-Caroline Chapman, Albany, 6-3 in the semifinals; lost to Alli McDaniel-Jayden Kelly, Albany, 6-4 to finish fourth.

Paisley Clark and Madison Parrott had a bye in the first round; lost to Balch-Wright, Stamford, 6-4 in the quarter finals.

Rashelle Sanchez and Brooke Richards lost to Davis-Phillips, Hawley, 6-4 in the first round.

Woods Peterson and Mason McCloy had a bye in the first round; defeated Lane Helle-Brody Oliver, Albany, 6-0 in the semifinals; lost to Calhan Fairchild-Huffman Heatly, 6-4 in the final to finish second.

Lane Helle and Brody Oliver defeated Pack-Roberts, Hawley, 6-0 in the first round; lost to Woods Peterson-Mason McCloy, Albany, 6-0 in the semifinals; lost to Mueller-Hernandez, Stamford, 6-1, to finish fourth.

Calhan Fairchild and Huffman Heatly defeated Siller-Cadena, Hawley, 6-3 in the first round; defeated Mueller-Hernandez, Stamford, 6-3 in the semifinals; defeated Woods Peterson-Mason McCloy, Albany, 6-4 in the final for the championship.

SEVENTH GRADE

Singles

Casey Estridge defeated Stofel, Hawley, 6-1 in the first round; lost to Valekamp, Stamford, 6-3 in the semifinals; defeated Flannagan, Hawley,6-0 to finish third.

Christian Hernandez defeated J.Bristow, Hawley, 6-0 in the first round; defeated Flannagan, Hawley, 6-0 in the semifinals; lost to Valekamp, Stamford, 6-3 in the final to finish second.

Doubles

Shooter Shoaf and Judson Rogers lost to Bushart-Caddell, Stamford, 6-3 in the first round.

Connor Smith and Britton Farmer defeated Gouge-Dean, Hawley, 6-0 in the first round; lost to Andruch-Vega, Stamford, 6-1 in the semifinals; defeated Bushart-Caddell, Stamford, 6-1 to finish third.
