JV Lions come back for last second win

After being down 13-0 at the half, the Albany JV Lions rallied to come back for a 14-13 win over Eastland last Thursday.

The Lions will host a Clyde JV team this week, with kickoff set for about 6:30 p.m. following a junior high game.

Albany picked up a game against Eastland last week, bringing home an exciting last-second win over the Mavericks.

“After being down 13-0 at the half, we made adjustments for the second half,” coach David Fair-child said.

Volleyball schedule to resume Saturday

The Lady Lion varsity volleyball team found themselves taking an unexpected two-week break in the midst of district play thanks to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

However, the squad is expected back at full strength for its first practice on Friday, resuming the regular schedule starting Saturday in Moran at 10:00 a.m.

With only four games remaining on the regular season schedule, the Lady Lions are hoping to pick up where they left off with their winning 14-2 record, including 2-0 in District 6-2A.

Jr. high teams to play Hico, Hawley

The two junior high football teams came home with victories last week, although against different opponents.

Both the seventh and eighth grade squads will play Thursday (today), with the eighth grade hosting Hico at 5:00 p.m.

The seventh graders will be on the road in Hawley for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.

The eighth grade Cubs remained undefeated last week with a 42-0 win over Meridian on the road. The win boosted the Cubs to 3-0 for the season, including 1-0 in district.

Bulldogs to play in Rule Friday

The Moran Bulldogs lost 14-61 against non-conference Three Way last Friday, Oct. 2.

 MISD athletic director John Hughes said the team might have lost but he is proud of how the group played.

“We started three freshman on both sides of the ball Friday night,” Hughes explained. “It’s time to get ready to play the Rule Bobcats at their house.”

Moran plays in Rule on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 a.m.

Albany to host Meridian this Friday

The Lion football team got an unexpected week off when last Friday’s game against the Anson Tigers was cancelled the day before the contest due to several positive COVID-19 tests reported among other segments of the Albany student population.

None of the new cases involved the football team, but school officials called a halt Thursday afternoon to all junior high and high school games against Anson.

The non-district games will not be rescheduled.

Lady Lions to be back on court Oct. 10

The 2020 volleyball is in the midst of an abrupt “time-out” after several members of the varsity squad tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus late last week, forcing the school to place the varsity and two coaches in quarantine.

Several games on the schedule have been cancelled, with the varsity team slated to get back on the court for practice on Friday, Oct. 9 when the two-week quarantine period ends.

The Lady Lions are holding steady with a season record of 13-2, including a 2-0 mark in District 6-2A.

CC runners place at meet

A trio of cross country runners placed at a meet in Hamlin on Sept. 23, continuing to improve their times.

The Albany High School cross country team will travel to Seymour next Wednesday, Oct. 7 for the next meet.

Brylee Moore took 13th place at the Hamlin meet with a time of 14:23. Maci Hachett finished 17th with a time of 14:48, while Briley Tabor ran a time of 14:50 for 19th place.

Bulldogs come up short against Lingleville

Moran Homecoming is Friday, Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. against the Three Way Braves.

“With all the normal distractions of homecoming, the guys have been extra focused on the task at hand,” said Moran ISD athletic director John Hughes. “Friday will be a challenge against Three Way, but if the guys do their jobs, we should hopefully get into the win column.”

Last Friday, the Moran Bulldogs came up short in the end against Lingleville, losing in a high scoring game of 59 to 70.

Defense holds Haskell to less than 10 yds.

Racking up almost 500 yards of offense while holding the Haskell Indians to just six yards of offense, the Albany Lions got right back on the winning track last Friday with a 43-0 win in Haskell.

Albany (3-1) will be on the road again this week in Anson to play the Tigers (3-1), who are coming off a big loss to Hamlin, similar to the loss Albany suffered at the hands of the Pipers the week before.

Tickets are available for Friday night’s game only at the Albany superintendent’s office – $5 for adults and $3 for students.
