Cubs, Lady Cubs split Hawley games

The Cubs and Lady Cubs have been busy the last two weeks playing teams from Cisco and Hawley.

The teams will play Hamlin on Monday, Dec. 7, with the girls on the road in Hamlin, and the boys hosting the Pipers. Games start at 5:30 p.m. at both locations.

Lions face Windthorst at regional level

Coming off a three-week break from action, it took the Lion football team most of the first quarter to get back into a rhythm that led to a 56-22 win over the Ralls Jackrabbits in the area playoff last week.

The Class 2A Div. II area win advances Albany to the regional semifinal game against a familiar foe.

The Lions (11-1) will face the Windthorst Trojans (11-1) on Friday in Breckenridge for the third round of the playoffs. Kickoff at Buckaroo Stadium is set for 2:00 p.m.

Local girls take top spots on all-district teams

The Lady Lion volleyball team took three of the top superlative honors and several first and second team places in the District 6-2A All-District selections.

Albany ended the regular season as co-champions of the district along with Hawley. Ranger also was included in the 2A division of the district, which was a mixture of 1A and 2A teams.

The Lady Lions (23-5) advanced to the state semi-final round before falling to Crawford last week, while Hawley was eliminated in the area game by Colorado City.

JV opens with win over Woodson

The high school boys basketball season has started on a limited basis as the program waits for more players to join in at the conclusion of the football playoff run by the Lions.

The JV opened the season at home Saturday with a 56-9 romp over the Woodson varsity team.

The Albany varsity schedule is on hold pending the end of football.

Lady Lions play full team

The Lady Lions varsity basketball team opened the season at home last Saturday, beating Woodson 64-7.

The varsity girls team also traveled to Guthrie on Monday, picking up a 40-37 win. Details of that game were not available due to an early deadline.

Both the JV and varsity girls were also scheduled to host Comanche on Tuesday. Results will be reported next week.

Both girls teams will be on the road Tuesday, Dec. 1 for games starting at 5:15 p.m. in Ballinger.

Lady Lions season ends at state semifinal

All good things come to an end, and so it was for the Lady Lions’ volleyball season on Tuesday, just one step short of the state championship game.

Albany lost to defending state champion Crawford in straight sets Tuesday, 25-14,25-11,25-14 in the Class 2A state semifinal game played in Weatherford.

The Lady Lions qualified for the state tournament as one of the final four teams for only the second time in program history with a three-set win over Wink last Saturday in Big Spring.

Albany to face Ralls today in area playoff

After a three-week break, the Albany Lion football team will finally see action Thursday (today) in the Class 2A-Div 1 area playoff against the Ralls  Jackrabbits at Snyder.

The second-round playoff bout will kick off at 7:00  p.m.with the Lions serving as the home team.

Tickets are selling for $6 for adults and $4 for students and must be purchased online by accessing a link on the Albany ISD website. A small processing fee will be added to each ticket sold.

Jr. high teams win 3 of 4 games

The Cubs and Lady Cubs won three out of four games during their opening set of games on Monday.

The junior high girls won both bouts against the visiting Abilene Christian School teams, while the boys split games with ACS in Abilene.

The four Albany teams are scheduled to play Cisco next Monday, Nov. 23, with the girls on the road and the boys at home.

The junior high girls are putting a Red team and a White team on the floor this season, both with a mixture of seventh and eighth grades.

The Red team edged out ACS 19-17.

Basketball starts with 53-18 win

The Lady Lion basketball team hosted Rule on Monday in the home opener, picking up a 53-18 win.

The varsity is scheduled to host the Abilene Lady Hawks on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. 

The girls are also on the books to travel to Guthrie on Monday, Nov. 23 at 6:00 p.m., then return home to host a Tuesday, Nov. 24 game against Comanche prior to a break for Thanksgiving.

The Lady Lions have been combining the JV and varsity players not playing volleyball, but the teams should be sorted out by next week now that volleyball is over.

Moran teams to face Woodson

Moran High School’s varsity girls basketball team traveled to Strawn on Friday, Nov. 13. 

The Lady Bulldogs came up short, losing 67-17. 

According to girls head coach John Hughes, the score isn’t a true reflection of the game.

“There is definite improvement from where we were last year,” said Hughes. “We still have things to work on, but it is early.”
