MISD school year gets underway this week

Moran ISD got a jump on many school districts in the state by starting classes on Monday, Aug. 8.

Moran started earlier than most districts because it is employing a four-day class week for this year.

Moran principal Jo Hise said the opening day of school avoided any major issues.

“I think it went fairly well,” Hise said. “We even enrolled a couple more kids, and that’s always a big plus. Everybody seemed excited and ready to go.”

Hise said the latest additions raised Moran’s enrollment for all grades to right at 100 students. An official count will be announced after the first week of classes.

Moran completed five days of teacher inservice last week in preparation for the start of classes.

“We were ready to roll Monday morning,” Hise said.

Now, Hise said, the focus is squarely on educating students.

"We’ll just continue to educate kids and hopefully make lifelong learners,” she said. “We’re going to implement a lot of the reading incentives, like Accelerated Reader, but we’re going to adapt it to the needs of our students.”

Banner Day

Moran celebrated one last achievement from the 2021-22 school year as part of its Meet the Bulldogs night on Thursday, Aug. 4.

A banner honoring Alli Scott’s medal-winning performance at the Class 1A state track and field meet was raised in the Moran gym. Scott won the girls 100-meter hurdles and placed second in the 300 hurdles.

The gold medal was Moran’s first at the state meet since Amy Moore won the 440-yard dash in 1972.

“This was a great thing, the first state champion we’ve had here in 50 years,” Moran athletic director John Hughes said. “It was just a big positive to end up last year.”
