Bulldogs to scrimmage today

The Moran Bulldogs football team joined other teams across the state in donning pads as the second week of preseason practice got under way.

The Bulldogs will get their first outing Thursday, Aug. 11 (tonight) in a scrimmage at Trent.

“It’ll be us, Trent, and Santa Anna in a three-way scrimmage,” Bulldogs coach John Hughes said. “We’ll work offense and defense, then take a break. When we come back, we’ll reverse the roles.”

The team received a bit of good news this week with the addition of a seventh player to the roster, giving Hughes an extra player to sub in after playing all last season with six.

Freshman Max Oliver joins senior Tyler Waddell, juniors Connor Hail, Caleb York, and Zech Henderson, and sophomores Cotten Campbell and Ellis Hise on the team.

Hughes said the Bulldogs will have enough players in pads to scrimmage this week after completing the UIL’s mandatory five-day acclimation period.

“We practiced Friday afternoon, the came back and had midnight madness Saturday morning,” Hughes said. “After Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, everybody is up to par.”

Hughes announced the second scrimmage, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 18, has been moved to Lueders-Avoca because of damage to Bulldog Field caused by wild hogs.

The Bulldogs open the regular season Friday, Aug. 26 at Benjamin.
