The Albany Junior High tennis team got its first taste of outside competition Wednesday, April 20, with more than 30 players competing against opponents from Winters at the Albany courts.

“The junior high tennis season is very short,” coach M.J. Reneau said. “It’s about  getting racquets in their hands, learning some rules, getting on the court, and just trying to get them some experience to see if this is something they’d like to do in high school.”

Albany won 15 of 18 matches, which consisted of one set. The seventh grade boys doubles pair of Shooter Shoaf and Judson Rogers played eighth grade opponents.

“I thought there was a lot of learning, and the kids had a lot of fun,” Reneau said. “It was really good getting them on the court versus other opponents and having them go through the tennis rules. For a lot of them, it was their first experience, and I thought they did great. They took it seriously, and tried their best to do things right on the court.”

The Cubs and Lady Cubs are playing an intrasquad tournament Thursday, April 28 (today) in preparation for their district tournament at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene. The girls will start at 4:00 p.m. Monday, May 2 and the boys at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.
