A Tale of Two Westerns: Tombstone vs. Wyatt Earp

By David H. Waller

With the passing of Val Kilmer—who may have delivered the greatest Western character in movie history with his portrayal of Doc Holliday—I’ve found myself reflecting on two of the most iconic Westerns of the early 1990s: Tombstone and Wyatt Earp. It’s always struck me as unusual that these two movies, covering much of the same ground, were released just months apart.

McCoy delivers incredible show at Aztec

By David H. Waller

To nearly a full crowd at the Aztec Theater, Neal McCoy took the stage in Albany for the first time in nearly 30 years—and it was well worth the wait. The last time he played here was at the Polo on the Prairie, and somehow, he remembered it like it was yesterday.

Words about the Word - Tom Chandler - Trinity Lutheran Church

“It was now the sixth hour, and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour, while the sun’s light failed. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!’ And having said this he breathed his last.” (Luke 23:44-46, ESV)

The Freedom of

Contentment

Are you living in the freedom of contentment today? I can tell you from my own experience that I might be living in contentment in one moment, but I often become distracted by an advertisement or something I see on social media. The next thing I know, my feelings of contentment seem to fly away like a helium balloon that comes untied. Have you ever felt this before?

Do you have a flight plan?

There have been a few major news stories of late regarding significant airplane accidents causing injury and death.  Rarely does an automobile accident make the news but in Texas about one death occurs every 2.5 hours in a vehicular accident.  Overall, about 700 Texans die each day from various causes.  In the vast majority of cases, not one of those folks knew that it would be their last day.  And, many, if not most, will “fly away” without a flight plan!

Lynsi's Local Beat: Too pesky? Waylon proves hard to find for some

By Lynsi Musselman

In January of this year, the Albany News came out with a character for young readers to locate each week in the newspaper. Waylon the Pesky Cowboy, hidden in every issue, has quickly become a fan favorite with the youth in Albany. Novel idea to increase readership, especially with an audience not as familiar with the idea of holding an actual paper.
