For many Texans, Robert Duvall never felt like a distant movie star. Through his role as Augustus “Gus” McCrae in Lonesome Dove, he felt more like family. For me, losing Gus at the end of that story was painful enough, and now with Duvall’s passing, it feels like losing him all over again.

The new year is always advertised as a time for change. A clean slate. A fresh start. A chance to improve yourself in ways you fully intend to abandon by mid January. New diets, new routines, new outlooks on life.

It’s about that time, (for many the time has already passed), to box up Christmas and put it back in storage for another year. Soon the city will be de-decorating. The decorations will come down at homes, stores, and places of worship. Everything will be back to normal. So is Christmas truly over?
I’m reminded of a story I came across in one of my books, from a man in Illinois:
What happens to us when we die? Surely, most people have entertained this question at some point.
I have two things on my mind this week — one good, and one… profoundly annoying. And because I prefer to ease into disappointment rather than dive straight into it, we’re going to start with the good. The annoying one will require a little emotional preparation and a deep breath.
