JV picks up win #2

The JV Lions picked up their second win in as many games, routing the JV Dublin Lions 44-22 last Thursday in Dublin.

Albany will host Eastland this week starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday (today) at Robert Nail Stadium.

The junior high games will be played in Eastland this week.

The decisive win in Dublin on Sept. 5 raised the JV’s record to 2-0 for the season.

Albany struck first, scoring on a one-yard run by Taren Farmer, followed by a two-point pass from quarterback Cole Chapman to London Fuentes.

Jr. high girls split first matches

The Lady Cubs opened the season at home last Thursday, with the eighth grade winning both games over Wylie East, while the seventh grade teams came up short.

The local teams are scheduled to play on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with the seventh grade teams staying home for a 4:30 p.m. start against Abilene Christian Middle School. The 8A girls are playing in Newcastle, starting at 5:00 p.m., followed by the high school varsity game at 6:00 p.m.

Runners medal at Coleman

Albany runners have competed in their first two cross country meets of the season, with three local competitors medaling in the most recent event at Coleman on Monday.

Brylee Moore took third out of 56 runners over a two-mile course in the JV girls division at Coleman.

Eighth grader Lute Wheeler was ninth among 111 runners in the junior high boys combined  two-mile run, while Caroline Holson was seventh of 83 athletes in the seventh grade girls’ division, also two miles.

Bulldogs defeat Rising Star 54-6

Moran defeated the Rising Star Wildcats last Friday night, Sept. 6 by a score of 54-6 to improve their record to 2-0.

For the second time in as many weeks, the Bulldogs were able to claim victory over an opponent by the rule of 45 during the third quarter, and head coach John Hughes was pleased with his team’s performance.

“The game went well, as we fixed a lot of the mistakes from last week,” Hughes said. “We still came out a little slow, but it was understandable considering we were playing at home for the first time this year.”

MHS athletes run at Eula

Moran sent 12 cross country runners to the Eula Invitational Cross Country Meet on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Seven girls competed on the varsity team which placed 16th. 

One Bulldog ran in the boys varsity section, and four girls ran in the junior varsity girls division, but Moran did not have enough runners to be considered a team in either of those divisions.

Lions open with Faith’s 300th win

It was a win for the record books, both for Coach Denney Faith and the Albany Lion program in general.

The Lions opened the 2019 season with an 18-3 win over the Colorado Wolves last Friday – avenging last season’s opening loss, giving head coach Denney Faith his 300th career victory and pushing the Albany program one notch closer to setting a program record of 700 wins this year.

The Lions will host Dublin in their home-opener this week, with kickoff on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Robert Nail Stadium.

Varsity records 4-set victory over Bangs

The Lady Lion volleyball teams traveled to Clyde last week, with all three squads recording losses to the 3A Lady Bulldogs.

Albany hosted Bangs on Tuesday with better results.

The varsity posted a 25-11, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22 win to improve to 9-8 for the season. Complete results will be reported next week.

The Lady Lions will also host Dublin on Friday, with the varsity starting the action at 4:00 p.m. The JV game will be played immediately following at about 5:00 p.m.

AJHS to open 2019 season

Both junior high football and volleyball programs are slated to start competition on Thursday (today).

Volleyball teams will host Wylie East at 4:30 p.m. with the seventh grade teams playing in the auxiliary gym and the eighth grade in the main gym.

A total of 32 girls have been divided into four groups, with an A and B team for each grade level.

Dakota Fowler coaches the eighth grade teams, while Ginger Norton will handle the seventh graders.

JV Lions shut out Wolves 36-0

The JV Lions opened the season last Thursday at home, shutting out the Colorado City Wolves 36-0.

The Lions will travel to Dublin on Thursday (today) for another pre-district bout. The JV will follow the two junior high games which start at 4:30 p.m. The JV kickoff is expected at about 6:45 p.m.

The Lions scored on their first possession against Colorado City last week, with quarterback Cole Chapman hitting Malachi Gueldner with a four-yard pass for the tally. The extra point attempt failed.

Bulldogs win big in season opener

The Moran Bulldogs won their first football game of the year, defeating Benjamin 58-12.

“We got the year started off right with a win over the Benjamin Mustangs,” said head coach John Hughes. “The guys gave great effort.”

The coach said that his players still have a lot of work to do and need to fix some mental mistakes, but he is pleased with the progress they have made.
