Leddie Leech has been named a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Texas 4-H Foundation Opportunity Scholarship Program. The scholarship is spread over eight semesters.

Moran scholarships listed

Six Moran High School seniors received scholarships last week at the school’s annual award banquet or graduation.

On Tuesday, May 23, Emily Murk received the $2,500 Guy and Charlotte McCain Scholarship. Also, Joanna Sullivan Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Tyler Waddell and Samantha Hinkle ($500 each), and Daphne Crews, Chloe Hendricks, and Alyssa Allred ($250).

Shenandoah to perform at Aztec June 10

About 100 tickets remain for the Albany Live concert on Saturday, June 10 at the Aztec Theater featuring the band Shenandoah, which is on a 35th anniversary tour.

Tickets are available online at www.albanylive.org. Just a handful of reserved seats were available on Monday for $100 each, while 90 general admission tickets at $75 each were available.

As with all Albany Live productions, a $50 VIP add-on is available for ticket holders that entitles ticket holders to enjoy food and drink after the performance to meet the artists.

Summer exhibitions to open at Old Jail Art Center

New exhibitions will open at the Old Jail Art Center with a members’ viewing and dinner reception on Saturday, June 10 and remain on view throughout the summer until Aug. 26.

The two exhibits, which will be featured during the Fandangle season, are Cheyenne Ledger Drawings: Stories of Warrior Artists and Corrie Thompson: Drought and Deluge.

Nineteenth-century Plains Indian drawings have been termed “ledger” drawings because they were often made with pencil, ink, and watercolor on pages of old ledger or account books.

Limited spots open in FCA camp

Deadline to register for the Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes Summer Camp at HSU is Monday, June 5.

The camp is scheduled for Monday-Friday, June 19-23, at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.

Local FCA representative Paul Johnston said space is limited with a total of 400 campers accepted.

“The camp is filling up and will be completely full by next week,” Johnston said. “I’m surprised it hasn’t officially filled up yet, but it’s close.”

Johnston said the camp is drawing from all corners of the state.

Commodities to be distributed

Pick-up dates for the June distribution of the commodity food program  provided by Shackelford County are June 1-2.

Moran families should pick up their food at the Moran City Hall between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, with Albany distribution set for Friday, June 2 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. at the rear door of the JP office.

ROB CHILDERS

Robert P. “Rob” Childers, 85, of Granbury, Texas and former resident of Albany, Texas, passed away on May 20, 2023 at his home in Granbury.

Rob was born on Dec. 2, 1937 in Seminole, Oklahoma to Robert Jefferson Childers and Ola Jewel Parsons and was the youngest of seven children. Rob graduated from Garden City High School in 1956 and married Kathleen Crabtree in Lovington, New Mexico on May 31, 1957.

RICHARD WILSON

Richard Ray Wilson 68, of Albany passed away May 27, 2023. He was born on May 8, 1955 in Abilene Texas to Aubrey Leston Wilson and Ruby Nell Jennings Wilson.

Richard grew up in Hamby, Texas and graduated from Albany High School in 1973. He attended Tarleton State University. Richard married Sara Turner on Mar. 18, 1978 in Austin, Texas. Richard worked for the city of Albany for 10 years and retired from EBAA Iron after 27 years.

Memorial Day service set May 29

A total of 16 names of Albany military veterans were added to the Veterans Memorial Monument on the courthouse square this week, just in time to be honored for Memorial Day.

The annual Memorial Day ceremony will be held Monday, May 29 at the Aztec Theater at 6:00 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Albany Lions Club.

The program will include music by Megan Ledbetter and Sandy Abel, with local veteran Matthew Sanchez as the speaker. Veteran Daniel Key will play Taps at the conclusion of the event.
