Deadline to register for the Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes Summer Camp at HSU is Monday, June 5.

The camp is scheduled for Monday-Friday, June 19-23, at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene.

Local FCA representative Paul Johnston said space is limited with a total of 400 campers accepted.

“The camp is filling up and will be completely full by next week,” Johnston said. “I’m surprised it hasn’t officially filled up yet, but it’s close.”

Johnston said the camp is drawing from all corners of the state.

“People will be coming from as far west as El Paso, as far north as the top of the Panhandle, as far south the Valley,” he said. “There will be kids there from Mission, Texas.”

Registration may be done by scanning a QR code contained on camp flyers. Registration may also be done online at www.bigcountryfca.org/camps.

The camp is for students who will be in seventh through 12th grade (ages 12 to 18) in the coming school year. The program is designed to engage, equip, and empower student leaders with tools and skills to lead “huddles” on their campus, according to the Big Country FCA website.

“The kids don’t have to be athletes,” Johnston said. “Obviously, since it’s FCA, there’ll be a lot of devotionals with speakers talking about character building.”

In addition, Johnston said, the camp will include a variety of activities such as swimming and bowling on campus as well as activities off campus.

Cost of the camp is $375 per camper, but Johnston emphasized that scholarships are available.

“Scan the QR code on the flyer and call me. I’ll give you a code, and I’ll raise the funds for you,” he said. “It’s basically a free camp if a kid wants to go, but they’ll need to call me.”

Those wanting to contribute to help fund a scholarship should also contact Johnston.
