Entries are being sought for the annual Quilt Show hosted by the Albany Study Club and displayed at the Whitney Theatre on Fandangle performance days.
Quilts on loan for the show should be taken to the Shackelford County Library by 12:00 noon Monday, June 12 in order to be placed on display that afternoon.
The quilt show is set for June 16-17 and June 23-24. Admission is free and open to all visitors from 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. each day.

First Baptist Church of Albany is helping provide meals for children of four local families through its summer backpack program.
FBC children’s minister Ginger Bumguardner said the project will run weekly through June and July.
“We’re attempting to provide some food over the summer for some kids who might need that,” Bumguardner said. “The school backpack program stopped during COVID, and they haven’t had it since. We’re trying to pick it up over the summer just to make sure kids who need it get fed.”

The Albany Lions Club presented $1,500 scholarships to Sweethearts Briley Tabor of Albany and Samantha Hinkle of Moran.
Lions Club member John Tate said the amount was a significant increase from last year.
The Sweethearts attend weekly Lions Club meetings when possible and make public appearances on behalf of the club.
“They’re in the Christmas and Fandangle parades,” Tate said. The main fundraiser for the scholarships is the Lions Club Benefit Bowl football game at Cisco College.

Recent rains have left standing water in several low-lying areas around Albany, creating ideal breeding environments for mosquitoes.
At the same time, weather conditions have also prevented city workers from combatting the insects before they become a problem.
Albany water plant supervisor Michael Graham said humidity and temperature levels must change before spraying can begin.

Six Albany High School seniors received $1,000 scholarships Friday, May 26 from Albany Masonic Lodge during commencement exercises at the high school gymnasium.
Graduates London Fuentes, Presley Green, Brooke Kayga, Gracie Price, Michael Sadler, and Briley Tabor were recipents of this year’s scholarships.
Lodge member Bob Skelton said the number of scholarships awarded was one more than in 2022.
“We gave five scholarships last year,” Skelton said. “We had another worthy applicant this year.”

About 75 tickets remain for the Albany Live! concert on Saturday, June 10 at the Aztec Theater featuring the band Shenandoah, which is on a 35th anniversary tour.
Tickets are available online at www.albanylive.org. Just 10 reserved seats were available on Monday for $100 each, while 65 general admission tickets at $75 each were available.
The $50 VIP add-on has sold out for this show. The add-ons allow ticket holders to enjoy food and drink after the performance and meet the artists.

The Albany Lions claimed 11 spots, including six superlative awards, on the All-District 8-2A baseball team, which was selected by vote of the district coaches. Every regular starter received at least second-team honors.
The Lions went 9-1 to win the district championship and finished 24-5 overall, reaching the regional semifinal round of the playoffs.

Albany’s entry in summer 7-on-7 competition came within a score and a conversion Saturday, June 3, of qualifying for state at the Texoma 7-on-7 Tournament.
Albany went 2-1 for the day in games played at Wichita Falls City View, beating Archer City and Electra to win Pool D before falling 18-12 to Childress in the qualifying game.

Albany will host a four-team bracket for the Texas West Little League District 5 Machine Pitch tournament Saturday, June 10, at the Albany Little League complex.
Albany Little League president Paul Hamilton said the tournament schedule has not been released yet, but games will start at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
The bracket winner will advance to the next stage of the tournament in Abilene.

Two Albany youth sports camps have wrapped up, with two more on the schedule for June and July.
The Albany Lions & Lady Lions All-Sports Camp and the Albany Basketball Camp were held the first two weeks after the end of the school year with the basketball camp concluding Tuesday, June 6.
Next up is the Albany Volleyball Camp, scheduled for Monday-Wednesday, June 26-28, for students entering first through ninth grades.
