FFA chapter elects officers for 2021-2022 year

The Albany High School FFA chapter has elected officers for the school year and is in the process of charting the course of its projects.

“We installed officers a couple of weeks ago,” Albany FFA sponsor Chris Beard said. “We’re having a meeting to figure out goals for both our fundraisers and our chapter as a whole.”

Leddie Leech will serve as president with Gracie Price as vice president. Kam Browning was elected secretary, Susie Cormack was named treasurer, and Cole Chapman is the reporter.

‘The Patch’ rescheduled Saturday

Bethel Assembly’s annual “The Patch” cele­bration is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Bank Park after being postponed last week because of wet conditions.

“Everything will be the same as originally planned,” event organizer Betsy Spraberry said. “You can’t outguess the weather, and we didn’t want to miss out on things if it rained.”

The event will get underway at 10:00 a.m. Saturday with a pumpkin market. Sales will continue until 2:00 p.m. or until the pumpkins sell out.

NIN garage sale planned Oct. 23

Neighbors in Need will conduct a fundraising sale of items at its facility on Oct. 23.

Lori Reames said the sale will help clear space at the facility.

The sale is scheduled for 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

“Everything is 25 cents an item unless otherwise marked,” Reames said. “The funds will go to our general fund, which could be used for heaters and air conditioners or our new building.”

Lutherans plan Mission Festival

Trinity Lutheran Church will hold its annual Mission Festival at 4:30 p.m. Sunday with a hamburger and hot dog meal to follow outdoors.

“This year, there will be an added celebration for the great amount of repair work and painting we were able to complete on our building this year,” pastor Tom Chandler said.

Chandler said the success of the work was driven home recently when a graduate student doing research on mid-20th century architecture stopped at the church and began asking questions and taking photos.

Garcia, Asher crowned 2021 royalty

Albany High School seniors Bryce Asher and Ansleigh Garcia were crowned 2021 Homecoming King and Queen during halftime last Friday night of the Albany vs. Olney game.

Three sets of Coming Home Kings and Queens for 1969-1971 were also presented on the field, along with other homecoming court nominees, princes and princesses, sweethearts and beaus.

Asher and Garcia were nominated by the sophomore class, with six other seniors nominated by the other three classes at AHS.

Albany rolls over Olney 55-6

The Albany Lions didn’t have very many opportunities on offense last Friday in their final non-district outing.

 It turned out they didn’t need as many as they had.

Despite running just 21 plays and losing two turnovers, the Lions improved to 5-0 with a 55-6 homecoming victory over the Olney Cubs at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

Lady Lions continue to dominate

The Albany Lady Lions began the second half of the District 6-2A volleyball schedule with a pair of sweeps, moving closer to their goal of a district championship.

“We are excited to start the second half of district and get closer to the playoffs,” Lady Lions coach M.J. Reneau said.

The varsity hosted Abilene TLC on Tuesday, Oct. 5, winning in three sets 25-12, 25-9,  25-6. Details will be reported next week.

On the same night, the JV1 and JV2 hosted teams from Knox City.

CC district to be run Oct. 13

The Albany High School and Junior High cross country athletes will compete at the District 10-2A meet Wednesday, Oct. 13 at the Anson Golf Course.

The Albany runners got a preview of the course Wednesday, Oct. 6 at the Anson Invitational. Results will be reported next week.

The district meet will start at 2:30 p.m. with the varsity boys, a three-mile race. The varsity girls will run two miles starting at 3:00 p.m.

Abbreviated games end in wins

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams made the most of limited opportunities last Thursday in recording a pair of victories at Olney.

Both seventh grade and eighth grade games were played with a running clock because of the threat of bad weather.

The seventh grade Cubs won 14-6, scoring on two of three possessions. The eighth grade won 8-0 despite running just nine offensive plays.
