Fajita lunch slated Friday

Albany residents can get a good lunch, watch golf, and support worthy causes Friday at the 14th annual John Rose & Jim Law Memorial Albany Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament and Fajita Fiesta.

While the tournament is expected to have a full field, the fajita lunch is open to the public at $15 per plate.

The event was rescheduled from its original date of Oct. 1.

The tournament raises funds for the Albany K Charity Scholarship Fund as well as a number of other local projects.

Masons to host tourney Oct. 23

The Albany Masonic Lodge Scholarship Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 23 at Albany Golf Course.

Entry fee for the four-person scramble is $300 per team. Hole sponsorships are available for $500. A sponsorship combined with a team entry is $700.

Entries are limited to the first 12 paid teams.

“We have not had any trouble in filling it up in years past,” Albany Mason John Tate said. “Every team that plays will get some kind of prize, and there’s a cash payout for the first place winners.”

Cubs to face separate opponents

The Albany Junior High Cubs football teams both turned in impressive defensive outings last Thursday in pitching shutouts against Meridian at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium.

Both the seventh grade and eighth grade Cubs held the Yellow Jackets to negative yardage in the victories.

The seventh grade won 30-0, while the eighth grade won 34-0.

AJHS Lady Cubs win TLC games

The Albany Junior High Lady Cubs swept matches on Oct. 5 against Abilene TLC.

The seventh grade Lady Cubs won 25-8, 25-21.

Amber Miramontes served for 10 points in the first set. Hattie Braly followed with four points, while Zayne Lefevre had three service points and Tatum Grady had one.

In the second set, Braly led the team with seven service points. Rashelle Sanchez served for three points, with Ashlyn Miller adding two and J’Cee Keen and Brooke Richards one apiece.

The eighth grade Lady Cubs won 28-26, 25-16. to improve to 7-2.

Cross country team runs in district meet Oct. 13

Albany cross country runners got a preview of their district meet when they ran Oct. 6 at the Anson Invitational.

The District 10-2A meet was scheduled for Wednesday on the same course. Results will be reported next week.

“In addition to the course, we saw almost every district team,” Albany coach Tate Thompson said. “We got to see what our kids are going to run against. That gave us an idea of what they need to run and where they need to be to be able to advance.”

Club tourney results listed

Akisha Holson, Randy Walker, and Charles Holson won their respective flights Sunday in the Albany Golf Club tournament at Albany Golf Course.

The two-day tournament included Saturday’s club business meeting for two seats on the club’s board of directors.

In the Open Division, Akisha Holson carded a 36-hole score of 151 to take a two-stroke victory over Bucky Nail. Ronnie Kitchens finished third at 160.

Lady Bulldogs to host Rising Star

The Moran Lady Bulldogs dropped a pair of District 6-2A volleyball matches last week.

On Oct. 5. Moran lost 11-25, 7-25, 6-25 at home against Newcastle.

“It was just an off night,” coach Jo Hise said.

On Saturday, the Lady  Bulldogs lost 7-25, 5-25, 16-25 at Albany.

Moran scored the first point of the day before the 10th ranked Lady Lions roared back to  dominate the first two sets.

Bulldogs 70-12 win ends early on mercy rule

The Moran Bulldogs faced plenty of adversity during the nondistrict portion of the football season and took several lumps along the way.

All that was washed away last Friday as the Bulldogs broke into the win column in a big way, beating the Paint Creek Pirates 70-12 in their District 9-1A Division II opener.

“The guys were working hard all week,” coach John Hughes said. “We had a good game plan set up for them, and they executed it. They did everything we asked them to do.”

JOHN MORROW

John Morrow, age 62 of Throckmorton, passed away Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 14 at Happy Wife Happy Life Events Venue with Pastor Paul Johnston. Burial will follow in the Albany Cemetery under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation was planned from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Happy Wife Happy Life Events Venue.

John Horton Morrow was born June 13, 1959 in Abilene, Texas to Wayne Morrow and Frances Free Morrow. John worked for WTU and later for AT&T for over 20 years until he retired. 

STANTON LILES, III

Stanton Dow Liles, III, was born Sept. 13, 1946, in Seymour, TX, and passed from this life on Oct. 8, 2021, in Wichita Falls, TX. A graveside service was held at the Throckmorton Cemetery Tuesday, Oct. 12, followed by a memorial service at First United Methodist Church, Throckmorton, TX, with Rev. Jay Gage officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Smith Family Funeral Homes, Throckmorton.
