OJAC sets date for workshops

The Old Jail Art Center children’s summer workshop registration is happening now with a deadline date set for Friday, July 1.

The traditional Cultural Connections Camp, which is centered on Greece this year, will be offered both on-site and virtually to start things off on Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Two other workshops will be in-person only on Aug. 5 and Aug. 9, then the popular puppet workshop will be only virtual Aug. 10-12.

Ministries to close 2 weeks

Closet Angels and The Local Exchange ministries will be closed from Sunday, June 26 through Saturday, July 9, as volunteers take their vacations.

Closet Angels director Lori Reames said the main number for both ministries, 325-762-0335, may be contacted in case urgent needs arise.

Closet Angels will continue to accept donations in the blue bins, but Reames asked that items not be left outside on the patios of either ministry.

FBC youth to host bake sale

The First Baptist Church youth group will hold a bake sale Sunday, June 26 to raise funds for summer camps.

The bake sale will start at noon in the Fellowship Hall and continue until everything is sold, with donations accepted.

FBC youth minister Eduardo San Lucas said the bake sale will be the final fundraiser before youth depart for camps.

Local All-Stars still playing at press time

One Albany Little League All-Star team had its run in the District 5 tournament come to an end this week, with a second still playing and a third just getting started.

Albany’s Major All-Stars survived one elimination game before falling to Wylie on Monday.

The Minor All-Stars are among the final six teams in its division after taking their first loss on Monday.

The Intermediate team, which combines players from Albany and Breckenridge, began play Tuesday, June 21. Results will be reported next week.

Conditioning continues

Albany’s summer conditioning programs for boys and girls entered its second week with participation rates holding steady.

“It’s just good, hard work,” Albany head football coach Denney Faith said. “We’ve had about the same number of kids, 20 to 25, showing up. Obviously, we’d like to have a few more.”

Summer workouts are regulated by UIL rules.

Boys summer sessions are from 7:00 a.m. to about 8:30 a.m. each Monday through Thursday until July 21, except for July 4. Workouts include weight lifting, agility drills and conditioning.

Father’s Day scramble winners listed

The team of Martinson, Martinson, and Martinson won a playoff against Wilson, Wilson, and Lamberti to claim the championship flight of the Albany Golf Club’s annual Father’s Day Scramble.

The two-day event wrapped up Sunday, June 19 at the Albany Golf Course.

A playoff was required after the two teams both shot 117 over two rounds.

Albany Golf Club president Randy Walker said the tournament weekend went well.

“We wound up with not as many teams as we’d have liked, but it was a good time,” he said. “We were happy with it.”

Youth golf clinic set Sunday

The Albany Kiwanis Club is sponsoring a free youth clinic Sunday, June 26, at Albany Golf Course.

The clinic, which will be conducted by Central Texas Junior Golf, is open to students in third through eighth grade. It is scheduled for 2:00-4:00 p.m.

Organizer Coralie Tidwell said the clinic has space for up to 40 students.

Instruction will be by PGA professionals.

Funding needed for upcoming Day Camp

ResourceCare is accepting sponsorships for its Summer Day Camp, which starts Monday, July 11.

“We’re taking sponsorships through the end of next week (Friday, July 1),” ResourceCare’s Mindy Ary said. “The sponsors’ names will be on the back of all the campers’  T-shirts. In order to meet the printing deadline, we’ll have to have those in by next week.”

Moran students have ‘power’ lunch

Officers of the Moran FFA chapter took part in a leadership lunch meeting Tuesday, June 21, with members of the Fort Worth Stock Show Syndicate.

The lunch meeting, which was sponsored by J.C. Johnson and the Dorset Johnson LLP Attorneys in Fort Worth, was held at the Fort Worth Club and in a room that has hosted  U.S. presidents and Texas governors.

MISD staff plans for 2022-2023 school year

Moran ISD faculty and staff met earlier this month with Joni West of the East End Co-Op to discuss how to better meet students’ needs.

Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said the meeting on Tuesday, June 14 was intended to help the district to provide resources for students.

“This meeting was to make sure our students who are behind can catch up,” Denson said. “We’re planning for next year and making sure everything’s in place.”
