Albany to host track meet Thursday

The girls track team finished as the fourth place team at the Eastland track meet last week, while the varsity boys placed sixth out of eight teams present.

The JV boys had the best team total of the day for Albany, placing third overall with 83 points. 

The girls garnered 61 points and the varsity boys scored a total of 36 points.

Albany will host a meet Thursday (today) starting at 3:00 p.m. with field events. Running events will follow at about 5:30 p.m.

Albany girls split district games

The Lady Lion softball team split games against district teams last week, beating a Class 1A opponent while losing to a 2A contender.

The district is mixed this season with a combination of both 1A and 2A schools, but teams in each classification will go separate ways when it comes to the playoffs.

Albany traveled to Haskell on Tuesday, suffering a second loss to the Maidens 18-0. Details of the bout will be reported next week.

AHS golfers to play 2nd round

Two Albany High School golfers competed in the first round of the district golf tournament Monday at Maxwell Municipal Golf Course in Abilene.

Both local athletes were entered as medalists because there are not enough players for a team.

The top two medalists from the district meet, if they are not already on a winning team, advance to the regional tournament, as do all members of the top two teams. 

Tennis team hosts 5 schools

Albany tennis players hosted five other schools in a practice meet here last Wednesday, March 20 in preparation for  tournament action this week and the district competition April 2-3.

The AHS athletes are entered in the Abilene High School Invitational Tournament this Friday and Saturday, March 29-30 prior to the district tournament at Rose Park in Abilene the following week. 

Players came from Eastland, Moran, Lueders, Breckenridge, and Anson, according to tennis coach Sara Wilson.

AJHS teams earn medals at Eastland track meet

The seventh grade boys and eighth grade girls teams both brought home third place finishes from the Eastland track meet last Friday, while the other two squads finished in fourth place.

The Cubs and Lady Cubs hosted a meet on Monday, but results were not available at press time.

The junior high will travel to Roscoe for the district meet on Thursday, April 11.

The eighth grade girls racked up 106 points for third behind Cisco and Breckenridge.

Lions put together 3 solid wins

The Lion baseball team picked up a pair of wins last Friday while hosting Hamlin and Wellington in a round robin, and the JV Lions also earned a win over Hamlin during a full day of baseball.

The varsity hosted Knox City on Tuesday in the final pre-district warm-up game, beating the Greyhounds 15-2. Details of the game will be reported next week.

The Lions will open District 8-2A action in Stamford on Friday with the opening pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. for the JV, followed by the varsity game at 7:00 p.m.

Golfers shoot at local meet

Three Albany High School golfers played in the seventh annual Tommy Terrell Invitational Golf Tournament here at the Albany Golf Course on Monday, March 18, with several other area schools bringing teams and medalists for the event.

Alayna Koemel shot a personal best 119 on Monday, placing fifth overall.

In the boys division, Cooper Fairchild shot a 109 on 18 holes, and Taren Farmer posted a score of 152.

Volunteers needed for track meets

The Albany track teams are hosting two track meets next week, and volunteers are needed to run the concession stands.

Monday, March 25 Albany will host a junior high meet with nine visiting schools signed up to participate.

High school tracksters from eight area schools will take to the local track and field on Thursday, March 28.

Track teams face larger schools

Albany tracksters faced a large field of athletes, many from much larger districts, at the Hamlin Piper Relays last Saturday to bring home a few medals and valuable experience.

The high school track teams will compete at the Eastland meet today, with the field events starting at 3:30 p.m. and the running at 5:30 p.m.

Both squads were operating at less than full strength at Hamlin due to spring break, but the coaches said that advances were made.

Tennis teams play in Cisco

On Wednesday, March 6, the Moran High School tennis team traveled to Cisco to participate in a practice match between Cisco, Baird, and Moran.

“Our girls doubles team beat the team from Cisco,” said tennis coach Jo Hise. “Our boys doubles team defeated Cisco and then lost to Baird.”

Moran will play in Albany on March 20.

Playing varsity tennis for Moran this year are seniors Kaylin New, KJ Henderson, and Kobee Lapp; junior Harley Schafer; sophmores Corbin Roberts and Corey Miller; and freshman Hannah Rogers.
