Lions pick up district no-hitter

The Albany High School baseball team picked up a 15-0 win in a no-hitter in Hamlin last week as the Lions prepared for their final round of district games.

Albany hosted Stamford on Tuesday to start the final three district bouts against the 2A portion of the bracket, earning a 3-0 win over the Bulldogs. Details of the game will be reported next week.

The Lions hold a 2-2 record among the 2A members of the district, with two games remaining.

Albany will play in Hawley on Friday at 1:00 p.m., wrapping up the regular portion of the schedule against Haskell next Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

Last Friday, before the second round started between the four 2A schools that are part of the mixed district, Hawley led with a 3-0 record, followed by Haskell in second (2-1), Albany in third (1-2) and Stamford in fourth (0-3). All four teams will advance to the bi-district playoffs during a May 2-4 window.

Three 1A schools were technically members of the district, but advance into the 1A bracket of the playoffs. The Lions defeated all three of the smaller schools, which included Eula, Hamlin, and Knox City.

The Lions also held a fundraising event last Friday, raising about $7,000 to help pay for uniforms and tournament expenses next season.

“If the kids collect all of the pledges that were made, we should have about $7,000,” coach David Fairchild said. “I’m very proud of our kids who went out and got the pledges. And I’m more proud of our community and parents for their generous donations and pledges.”

The coach said that there were only 15 players hitting in the long ball contest, but despite lower numbers, the total was near a record amount.

Hamlin Game

Pitcher Cade Neve threw a no-hitter against Hamlin on April 9, going the full five innings on the mound.

“Cade had a great game with the no-hitter,” the coach said. “He had his pitches working for him and took command of the game.”

Neve struck out nine batters at the plate, giving up no runs, no hits, and only two walks.

“Offensively, the guys put up 17 hits,” Fairchild said. “Josh Dyer led by going three for three at the plate, hitting a home run in the first inning, along with a double, a single, and three RBIs. Overall, it was a good game with good pitching and a lot of hitting.”
