Lions could end second in district

The Lion baseball team clinched at least a third place finish in the district race with a pair of wins over Stamford and Hawley last week.

Albany was scheduled to host Haskell yesterday, weather permitting, where a victory in their regular season finale would propel the Lions to a second place finish in the District 8-2A race.

Albany will advance to the bi-district series during the three-day window starting next Thursday, but who they would face was still up in the air due to a three-way tie in District 7-2A.

DeLeon appears to be the winner of 7-2A, with Miles, Winters and Cross Plains all in contention for the next three spots.

The Lions will draw the third place team if they beat Haskell, but a loss to the Indians will pair Albany with the second place squad.

“We had a really good week with a couple of important wins,” coach David Fairchild said. “Hopefully, we are able to beat Haskell in the last game and take second place in district.”

The coach stated that if the Haskell game is postponed due to rain, the game probably couldn’t be rescheduled until Monday since the Lions, along with the other district schools, will be participating in the Region I track meet in Levelland on Friday and Saturday.

Albany started the second round against other 2A members of the district with a 3-0 win over Stamford on April 16.

“Ben West got the win on the mound for us, going six innings and giving up only one hit and striking out nine,” the coach said. “He also had a great game at bat for us.”

West walked three batters, but didn’t allow the Bulldogs a run. Cade Neve came in to close for the seventh inning, allowing one hit.

“Cade had a great game on the mound, and Josh came in for just the second time this season to finish for us,” Fairchild said. “They both did a great job.”

The coach commended Dyer for leading at bat with a triple and a pair of singles, getting three of Albany’s 11 hits.
