The Lady Lion softball team continues to fall to the 2A teams in their district, losing to Hawley at home on Tuesday, 9-7 to finish in fourth place in their bracket of the playoffs.

The regular season schedule will end next Tuesday in Eula against Lady Pirates at 5:00 p.m., rescheduled from this Friday.

The Lady Lions, Haskell, Stamford, and Hawley competed in the 2A division of District 7-2A, while Knox City, Eula, and Baird will advance into the 1A bracket of the playoffs.

Coach Jimmy Fuentes expects Albany to be paired against Windthorst as the winner District 8-2A in the first round of the playoffs.

The window for the bi-district round is set for April 25-27, but more than likely, the playoff will have to be a single game next Thursday due to the regional track meet on Friday and Saturday. Details will be reported next week.

Albany opened the second round of games against 2A district teams in Stamford on April 9. The Lady Lions fell 7-0 to the Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Lions also lost to Haskell, 7-3, at home last Friday.

“Our goal for the second half of district was to play each team better than we did in the first round,” Fuentes said. “In some aspects we were able to do that, but we have to continue to work on making routine plays consistently and getting timely hits with runners in scoring position through good pitch selection.”

Ana Balliew opened on the mound against Stamford, going three and a third innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. She struck out three and didn’t allow any walks. Sara Smith came in as relief, giving up two hits and two walks, but no runs. She had one strikeout.
