Moran senior advances to state

Moran senior Kobee Lapp won gold in the triple jump at the Region 3-A track meet at Whitney High School last Friday and is headed to the 2019 University Interscholastic League Track and Field State Championships in Austin on Friday, May 10.

“He won the event on his final jump by over a half a foot,” said coach Matthew Hise. “Going into the last jump he was in third place. After losing out of going to state last year by 1/4 of an inch, it was extremely exciting to see him earn his way to state this time.”

Matthew Hise and Dakota Fowler were both at the regional meet to coach the Moran regional qualifiers Lapp and Johnnie Hise.

“We are so proud of Kobee here at Moran ISD,” said coach Fowler. “He a strong and competitive athlete, and he has participated in football, basketball, tennis, and track. Not only that, but he is a motivated student and a kind and responsible young man.”

In the girls competition, Johnnie Hise was 12th to cross the line in the 800 meter run.

“Seeing a freshman make it to the regional track meet is a very proud moment for us,” said coach Hise. “She was just off her personal best by two seconds. She is a hard worker, and I believe she will earn her way back again.”

The coach said that they are proud of both of the Moran athletes.

“If Kobee jumps like we know he can, he has a good chance of earning a medal at state,” he added.

Lapp jumped 42-11 at the regional meet, almost six inches beyond his closest competitor at Whitney, junior Max Dayton of Baird, who also advanced to state.

However, also qualifying for Austin were Isaac Jackson and Key’undre Davis from Region 4-1A with jumps of 43-11.25 and 43-06.25 respectively, leaving Lapp sitting in third going into the state 1A meet with a personal record of 43-02.

Boys 1A triple jump is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m. on P-2, which is near the west bleachers of the University of Texas Mike A. Myers Stadium at 707 Clyde Littlefield Drive.

Tickets to the state meet can be purchased online at the UIL website, and prices vary from $30 for an all-meet ticket to a student individual session ticket with no re-entry for $7. A day pass for Friday, when all the 1A events are scheduled, is $20.

Lapp also qualified and placed in high jump and long jump at the meet in Whitney.

The senior Bulldog tied for eighth in high jump, clearing the bar at 5-04.00, and he took 10th in long jump with a distance of 18-08.
