TxDOT plans highway projects

By Kathy Thomson

The Texas Department of Transportation has several road repair projects underway or in planning stages in Shackelford County, including rehabilitating and widening the roadway on Highway 283 north of town and resurfacing and roadway construction on Highway 6 south.

State Highway 6, where it heads south of Albany toward the county line, was resealed a few years ago, but the stretch of road is in need of more work sooner than many expected.

School supplies are being accepted at the Kindred at Home health office in Albany during the company’s national campaign drive in August, and Tracy Sullivan recently picked up a donation from the Shackelford County EMS station that included just what the schools are requesting.

The local campuses both put tissue and hand sanitizer at the top of their lists, said Sullivan.

New teachers correctly identified

EDITOR’S NOTE: In last week’s Back-to-School special section, the News mistakenly switched two of the photos that went with the new teacher bios. Those two portions of the article are reprinted below. The News apologizes for this error.

Also, the list of teacher assignments from the school inadvertently left off the name of veteran secondary English instructor Melanie Anderson, who will teach junior high ELA.

Churches plan back to school events

By Kathy Thomson

Several Albany churches traditionally schedule special events during the transition from summer to the start of the school year to encourage local students to take advantage of opportunities to plug into groups where they can grow in their faith while enjoying the fellowship of other Christians.

The following activities are planned for students over the next few weeks.

Aug. 25 – C of C

The Church of Christ will have its annual back to school pool party at the Webb Park Pool on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Physicals available

By Kathy Thomson

Students who still need school physicals can make an appointment with one of two local clinics, including band students who have not previously been required to have exams.

Both the Shackelford County Health Clinic and ResourceCare charge $25 for a school physical, and appointments are needed at both clinics.

Athletes who did not take advantage of the school sponsored physicals in May are expected to pay for the exam, with one exception.

AISD trustees vote to give raises

By Melinda L. Lucas

Albany ISD teachers who have been teaching 20-plus years got a big raise they probably didn’t expect when AISD trustees voted at a special session last Thursday night to match the state’s new minimum pay increase for staff members who weren’t included in the recently passed House Bill 3.

The long-awaited state legislation had already awarded substantial raises to teachers, nurses, counselors, and librarians with zero to 20 years of experience, with increases proportionate to years of experience.

Registration to continue at local schools

By Kathy Thomson

School bells will ring out the start of a new school year a week from today, and any students who are not yet registered should complete the process as soon as possible so teachers and administrators know how many students to expect.

Local classes start on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 7:55 a.m. at the elementary school and five minutes later at 8:00 a.m. at the secondary campus.

NSES Registration

Twenty-eight new students have enrolled at Nancy Smith Elementary School since May, according to PEIMS coordinator Lillian Wheeler.

African Art

The final two Old Jail Art Center sponsored children’s summer camps take place in the next week, with spots still available for both classes at press time.

The traditional Cell Series Teen Workshop originally scheduled for next Tuesday, Aug. 13 has been cancelled, according to Susan Montgomery, the Old Jail’s membership and development coordinator.

Usually planned for eighth graders through high school age, the class didn’t draw enough participants this year, probably because of too many conflicts, said Montgomery.
