The varsity Bulldogs lost a close football game last week when they hosted the Strawn JV for a Thursday evening dog fight.

“We lost a close one to the Strawn JV, 38-44,” said Moran head coach Harley Ethridge. “It was a see-saw battle the entire game and came down to the last minute with us on the Strawn three-yard line. On third down we fumbled the ball and the Greyhounds recovered and ran out the clock.”

The junior high Bulldogs also lost to Strawn last Thursday, Sept. 27. The Greyhounds outran the local team 41-0, dropping the Moran middle school season record to 1-2.

Eleven upperclassmen from Moran High School traveled to Cisco Tuesday, Oct. 2, to attend a college fair held at the Myrtle Wilks Community Center.

Participants included Jonas Cadena, K.J. Henderson, Emma Hensley, Andrew Farner, Kobee Lapp, Raygan Mendez, November Meredith, Khloe New, Summer Pederson, Curry Pendleton, and Harley Schafer.

The first six weeks grading period at Moran ISD ended on Friday, Sept. 28.

The annual membership meeting of the Fort Griffin Fandangle Assocation is scheduled to be held at the Albany Visitors Center on Monday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m.

Reports about the 2018 outdoor show and a motion to hold the Fandangle in 2019 are expected.

Directors who terms are up for election this year are John Ayers, Shelly Bartee, and Paul Ivy.

Terms of directors Treca Edington and Steve Waller, who were re-elected in 2016, will expire next year.

Pick-up dates for the October distribution of the commodity food program are Oct. 4 and Oct. 5, and recipients must pick up their October bags this week in order to be given a special holiday bag next month.

Eligible families in Moran should pick up their food Thursday, Oct. 4 at the Moran City Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

Albany families can pick up their commodity food Friday, Oct. 5, at the rear door of the JP office from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. 

Albany local medical professionals are advising Shackelford County residents to get vaccinated before the beginning of the flu season following last Thursday’s announcement by national public health and medical groups that kicked off the 2018-2019 flu vaccine campaign.

“We started giving flu shots on Monday,” said ResourceCare nurse Holly Martin. “We always recommend getting the flu shot by Oct. 15, and I’ve heard that it will be an early flu season this year. I am recommending that folks get vaccinated right away.” 

Ticket holders are encouraged to arrive at the Friends of Fort Griffin 15th Annual Gala at the Collins Creek Ranch this Saturday, Oct. 6, as early in the evening as they can, because Doug Moreland will give a demonstration of his chainsaw carving abilities as soon as the gates to the ranch open for the event at 6:00 p.m. 

“We don’t know what Doug will carve,” said organizer Susan Waller. “It’s supposed to be a surprise. Everyone is encouraged to come and guess what it is going to be as he is working.”

The bar opens and the silent auctions begin at 6:00 p.m.

Over 100 boys and girls started playing games in the Albany NFL Flag Football league this week.

“Sixth graders have two teams and play NFL Flag Football against each other on Tuesdays,” said league organizer Anthony Ceder. “Coaches are Campbell Terry and Matt Birkla.”

The other three age divisions have four teams each.

The Albany Ex-Students Association Homecoming committee members including Betsy Senter, Tammy Brown, Bobbie Cauble, Leigh Lowe, and Charlotte Taggart have planned several activities for alumni on both Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13, of homecoming week.

Former students are encouraged to attend the 8:40 a.m. pep rally at the Albany High School gym on Friday, and also the 5:00 p.m. parade through downtown Albany later the same day.

At least one Albany resident has been approached recently by phone scammers, and he is warning other local residents to be on the alert.

Sam Burge said that he and his wife Dimple received a call a couple of weeks ago informing them that their grandson had been arrested and needed money for legal fees. They were asked for credit card information.

“They had a lot of personal information about both us and our grandson,” said Burge. “They knew his name, our names, that he was a Marine, and where he is stationed.” 

Albany High School students will vote next week for the seniors to be named Homecoming King and Queen. 

Last Friday, Sept. 28, each of the four classes at AHS selected nominees for king and queen from among the seniors.

The juniors, sophomores, and freshmen also selected their class prince and princess, and honorees from several other organizations will join them in the homecoming court. 

The selected royalty will be presented during halftime of the Albany homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 12.
