Albany News

The Albany Ex-Students Association Homecoming committee members including Betsy Senter, Tammy Brown, Bobbie Cauble, Leigh Lowe, and Charlotte Taggart have planned several activities for alumni on both Friday and Saturday, Oct. 12-13, of homecoming week.

Former students are encouraged to attend the 8:40 a.m. pep rally at the Albany High School gym on Friday, and also the 5:00 p.m. parade through downtown Albany later the same day.

Those wanting to enter a float should contact principal Edward Morales at the high school to reserve a spot. The parade begins at 5:00 p.m. and floats are to arrive at the football stadium parking lot by 4:15 p.m.

The school office number is 325-762-3974.

50th Reunion Classes

Every other year Albany exes honor two classes that will be celebrating their 50th reunion, and this year the honored classes are the AHS classes of 1967 and 1968.

Both of those classes will have a float in the parade, and class members are encouraged to arrive at the parade set-up area by 4:30 p.m. on Friday to claim a chair on their float, according to Association president Senter.

Susan Hagood Morrison and Ted Ivy have been chosen as Coming Home Royalty for the Class of 1967.

Charlotte Johnston Taggart and Joe Key are the Coming Home Royalty for the Class of 1968.

The two honorees for each class will ride in a car that will directly precede their class float.

FBC Fundraiser

Many graduates plan to eat supper at the First Baptist Church’s Chili, Bean, and Cornbread Fundraiser before attending the Albany versus Baird varsity football game.

The FBC fundraiser supper will be served on Friday, Oct. 12, from 5:30 p.m. (or immediately following the parade) until the 7:00 p.m. kickoff of the game.

Association Dues

The Ex-Students Association will have a table set up at the FBC fundraiser, and also at the football game, so former students can pay membership dues ($10), reserve a spot at the Saturday lunch at the Aztec ($15), and update their contact information as needed.

Alternately, they can send their contact information and dues to Albany Ex-Students Association, PO Box 2633, Albany TX 76430.

The dues are only requested every second year, and are needed in order to cover the costs of paper, envelopes, and stamps for the newsletter.

Game Details

The Albany Lions will host the Baird Bears  at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium in front of the Homecoming crowd on Friday, Oct. 12.

High school royalty and the Coming Home royalty will be presented during the halftime activities.

Class of 1988

The Class of 1988 will meet at Kim Cauble Russell’s house after the game on Friday, according to James Sanders.

Saturday Activities

Saturday, Oct. 13, the ex-student organized activities begin with the Jr. Garcia Memorial Golf Tournament, hosted by the Class of 1988, and held at the Albany municipal golf course starting at 8:00 a.m. The morning tee-off is at 8:30 a.m. and the afternoon tee-off is at 1:30 p.m. For more information about the golf fundraiser, contact James Sanders at 325-201-4770.

At 10:00 a.m. at the Aztec Theater, the association will hold its biennial meeting. There will also be a showing of the Edwin Dyess Story.

Gift bags courtesy of the merchant committee of Albany Chamber of Commerce will be handed out to the first 75 attendees.

“Mayor Rodney Alexander, Class of ‘87, will give an update of what’s happening in Albany, including the new residential development, and we will solicit ideas of what alumni would like to do/see/enjoy at future homecoming celebrations,” said Senter. “There will be a salad lunch in the Aztec meeting room and patio following the meeting.”

The Class of 1968 has a Saturday lunch planned at Prairie Star’s Cookshack for classmates and their spouses, according Taggart.

The Class of 1967 will gather at Senter’s home at 2:00 p.m. for an afternoon of visiting.

Several other events are planned over the weekend, including a local truck show, downtown merchant discounts, and the Living History reenactment.
