The Albany Lions golf team took advantage of spring break to get in a practice round at Sweetwater Country Club, which will host the second round of the District 10-2A tournament next month.

Albany’s next tournament outing is Monday, March 20 (boys), and Wednesday, March 22 (girls), at the Trent tournament played at Baird’s Shady Oaks Golf Club. Shady Oaks will host the first round of district play.

On Wednesday, March 8, Albany’s Myleigh Leveridge shot 132 in the girls division of the Eula tournament, played at Shady Oaks.

Albany’s plans to host its annual tennis tournament Thursday, March 9 were done in by the weather, costing the program a key outing with district competition looming.

Albany will compete in the Brownwood tournament on Friday, March 24 in its final tune-up before the District 10-2A tournament.

“We held off making a decision as long as we could,” Albany tennis coach M.J. Reneau said. “We didn’t want to cancel because we still want to look at a couple of combinations with players. We hate missing a tournament whenever it’s so close to district.”

The Albany Lions bounced back from their first loss of the baseball season last week with a sweep of their home tournament.

The Lions (8-1) had no games scheduled this week during spring break, though coach David Fairchild said Tuesday he was still looking to add one. Albany opens District 8-2A competition at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, against Hawley at home.

On Tuesday, March 7, Albany lost 7-4 to Class 4A Vernon in its home opener.

Albany’s two returning state track medalists each won two events Thursday, March 9 at the Lobo Relays in Cisco, helping the Lions and Lady Lions to fifth-place finishes in the varsity team standings.

The Lions and Lady Lions maintained their training regimen during spring break and many will compete Saturday, March 18 at the Possum Kingdom Relays in Graham.

Adam Hill, last year’s silver medalist in the Class 2A 110 hurdles, won both boys hurdles races. Kiana Roberson, the 2A bronze medalist in the shot put, won both girls throwing events.

Moran began its spring sports schedule with high school, junior high, and elementary track meets over the last two weeks.

On Tuesday, March 7, Moran students were competing in the Early tennis tournament. Results will be reported next week.

The Lady Bulldogs began competition Thursday, Feb. 23 at the Breckenridge relays meet, then boys and girls teams competed at Trent on Friday, March 3.

The Albany tennis team came away with nine medals, including five gold, Tuesday, Feb. 28 in a two-team competition with Hawley at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene.

Albany will host its tournament Thursday, March 9 (today). Coach M.J. Reneau said action will get underway at 8:30 a.m.

Albany engaged in bracket play against Hawley with players competing in both singles and doubles.

The Albany Lions golf team shot five rounds under 90 Monday, March 6 to finish second in the team standings at the Eula tournament at Baird’s Shady Oaks Golf Course.

Albany’s Myleigh Leveridge played in the girls division Wednesday, March 8. Results will be reported next week.

Albany golfers have next week off for spring break, then return to action Monday, March 20 (boys) and Wednesday, March 22 (girls) at the Trent tournament at Shady Oaks.

The Albany track and field teams were left with nowhere to run Thursday, March 2 with the cancellation of the Bangs meet.

Albany athletes return to action Thursday, March 9 (today) at Cisco.

Boys coach Rod Britting said the loss of a meet was something the Lions would have to overcome in the weeks before the district meet on Thursday, April 6.

The Lady Lions softball team closed out its tournament schedule last week by going 2-3 Thursday-Saturday, March 2-4 at the Clifton tournament.

Albany (8-9-1) was supposed to open District 10-2A play Tuesday against Gorman, but the Panthers forfeited because they didn’t have enough players.

Lady Lions coach Jimmy Fuentes announced a handful of schedule changes that will allow the team to take off most of next week for spring break.

The Albany Lions baseball team remained undefeated last week, winning two games at the weather-shortened Bonham/Bells tournament.

The Lions (4-1) played 4A Vernon in their home opener Tuesday, March 7, losing 7-4. Details will be reported next week.

Albany hosts its varsity tournament Thursday, March 9 (today) through Saturday, March 11. The Lions are scheduled to play Eastland at 9:00 a.m. and Seymour at 3:00 p.m. today, followed by Brady at 11:00 a.m. Friday and Winters at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
