The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track and field teams made their final outing before district on Thursday, March 30 at the Golden Shoes Relays in Clyde.

The District 10-2A meet is being held Thursday, April 6 (today), at Cisco. Results will be reported next week.

The top four finishers in each event at the district meet qualify for the area meet with District 9-2A on Friday, April 13 at Graham. A top-four finish at area earns a trip to the Region II-2A meet April 28-29 at Springtown.

Three Albany athletes – senior Tye Edgar and juniors Adam Hill and Kiana Roberson – will be looking to return to the state meet in Austin.

At Clyde, the Albany boys finished second in the team standings with 97 points, finishing ahead of district teams Cisco, Stamford, and Anson. The Lions have competed against four district teams the last two meets, giving boys coach Rod Britting some insight on how to fashion his district lineup.

“You start looking at times in each event and see if there’s a place to move a kid to give us a shot to win the title,” Britting said. “In order to win it, we’d have to do a lot of things right, and somebody else might have to do some things wrong.”

Hill won both hurdles races, setting another personal record in the 110 hurdles at 14.64, and he anchored the winning 1600 relay with Cason Fairchild, Samuel Rosas, and London Fuentes.

“Adam had another good day, but it was really windy,” Britting said. “Times weren’t as good as I would have liked. We had about a 30-mile-an-hour head right at the finish line.”

In addition to the conditions, Fairchild and Fuentes were among a number of Albany athletes who competed in the District 10-2A tennis tournament earlier in the day.

Cole Chapman won the triple jump and was second in the long jump, while Luke Marshall was second in the pole vault.

Wyatt Windham was third in the high jump, with the 800 relay of Fairchild, Fuentes, Chapman, and Edgar also taking bronze.

Also scoring points were Lanxton Viertel in the shot put and discus, Edgar and Jayden Lucas in the pole vault, and Rosas in the 800.

In the girls division, Albany totalled 37 points to finish seventh.

Roberson won both throwing events, setting a personal record in the shot put at 38-6, and was just an inch off the discus school record she set a week earlier at Albany’s Roaring Lions Relays.

Gineveve Soders was second in the high jump, competing in the event for the first time this spring, and Briley Tabor was second in the pole vault.

“Field event-wise, I thought we did pretty well,” girls coach Ryder Peacock said. “We had some girls get to their personal bests. “Mimi Ivy jumped her best in the triple jump before she got banged up.”

Peacock said participation in the tennis tournament cut into the Lady Lions’ running events. Avery Everitt scored Albany’s only point on the track, finishing sixth in the 100 hurdles.

In the JV boys division, Albany finished fifth with 55 points. Mason McCloy won the pole vault, and Huffman Heatly won the 1600. The 400 relay was second, and the 800 relay was third.

Marie Hufschmidt, Albany’s only entry in the JV girls division, ran her best times of the season in both the 800 and 1600.
