Moran athletes log lots of hours

Moran track and field athletes had a busy week with meets at the high school, junior high and elementary levels.

The high schoolers are making their final outing before the district meet Thursday, April 6 (today), at Hermleigh’s Wind Energy Relays. The District 13-1A meet will be held Thursday, April 13, at May.

On Thursday, March 30, Moran competed at the May Tiger Relays after a late change of plans.

“We were supposed to go to Breckenridge, but that meet was cancelled,” Moran coach John Hughes said. “The girls and boys did well with some major improvements on both sides.”

The Lady Bulldogs tied for sixth place with 40 points. Alli Scott won the high jump (5-2), long Jump (16-1½), 100 hurdles (15.96) and 300 hurdles (47.74).

Jordan Martin competed in her first meet of the year running the 100 (15.11) and the 200 (33.66). Samantha Hinkle competed in the shot put and discus, but did not receive a mark.

On the boys side, Chase Murk competed in the long jump (13-2), 100 (14.63), 400 (1:19.22) and the 200 (no time was recorded).

“In three of the four events he competed in, there was major improvement,” Hughes said.

Junior High

Moran’s junior high athletes closed out the season  Friday, March 31, with the district meet at Cross Plains.

Moran finished with seven points in the boys team standings.

Garrett Hamilton finished third in the shot put (34-9) as well as competing in the discus, 100 (14.21), 400 (1:08.77) and 200 (31.20).

Landon Moreno placed sixth in the shot put (28-11) along with his efforts in the discus (62-8), 100 (15.11) and 200 (34.56).

Other Moran entries included Dylan Kinman, who competed in the 800 (3:25.64), 400 (1:21.45) and 200 (36.30). Dylan Herrod competed in the 100 (16.43) and 400 (1:21.40). Miguel Rodriguez competed in the shot put and Gavin Medina competed in the discus.

Elementary

Moran had two more athletes qualify for the medal meet at the end of the season with their performance Saturday, April 1 at the Rising Star meet.

The elementary teams are off this weekend for Easter, but return to action Saturday, April 15 at Blanket.

At Rising Star, Demi Sebree and Lilianna Rodriguez qualified for the medal meet. Sebree was fourth in the shot put in addition to placing fifth in the 100, sixth in the 200 and throwing the discus (32-11½). Rodriguez was fourth in the discus to qualify, along with fourth in the 200, fifth in the 100 and eighth in the shot put.

Caliann Carroll was second in the 200, third in the high jump, fourth in the 100 and also competed in the long jump.

Amelia York was second in the 300 hurdles, third in the 100 hurdles and also long jumped.

Emmie Hise was second in the 800, fifth in the 400, seventh in the shot put and also threw the discus.

Naomi Garza was third in the 800, fifth in the 400 and also high jumped.

Jaelynn Courtney was fourth in the 200 along with competing in the long jump and high jump.

Kamelia Alexander was sixth in both the 100 and 200 while also competing in the long jump and high jump.

Raelynn Henderson was sixth in the 400 and also competed in the long jump and high jump.

The sprint relay of Rodriguez, Courtney, Henderson, and York finished fifth.

In the boys division, James Hise won the 800, was fourth in the 400 as well as competing in the long jump and high jump.

Andy Barron finished second in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, fifth in the high jump and also was in the long jump.

Christian Rodriguez was third in the 200, fifth in the 100 and also competed in the in the long jump and high jump.

Ricky Lee was third in the 100, fourth in the 200 and also competed in the shot put and discus.

Tyler Dickson-New was fourth in both the 400 and 200 along with competing in the long jump.

The sprint relay of Barron. James Hise, Christian Rodriguez and Lee finished fourth.

Tennis

Moran had three top-four finishes Wednesday, March 29, at the District 13-1A tennis tournament.

In boys doubles, Tyler Waddell and Connor Hail defeated teammates Ellis Hise and Caleb York 6-2, 6-1 in the third-place match, but lost in a playback for a regional berth.

Waddell-Hail beat Baird’s Schlieve-Wooten 6-2, 6-2 in the first round and lost to eventual champions Gray-Gray of Eula in the semifinals. The Moran duo the lost to Baird’s Collins-Gregory in the playback.

Hise-York beat Eula’s Johnson-Stavorczik 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round, then lost 6-3, 6-3 to  Collins-Gregory in the semifinals.

In girls doubles, Samantha Hinkle and Emily Murk finished fourth. After beating Eula’s-Coats-Cash 6-1, 7-5 in the first round, Hinkle-Murk lost to Baird’s Langford-Patton 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals and 6-4, 6-2 to Taylor-Wedking of Cross Plains in the third-place match.

Chase Murk competed in the JV division in boys singles.

Golf

Connor Hail represented Moran Monday, March 27 at the 13-1A golf tournament, shooting 128 at Baird’s Shady Oaks Golf Course.
