Coaches to offer camps starting next Tuesday

Albanycoachesareonce again offering summer sports camps with the first one coming up next week. The Albany Lions and Lady Lions All-Sports Camp is scheduled for Tuesday-Thursday, May 28-30 at the Green Room.

Lions lose quarterfinals to Hawley

The Albany Lions saw their baseball season come to a frustrating end as the Hawley Bearcats held on to sweep their Class 2A regional quarterfinal series at McMurry’s Walt Driggers Field. The series was delayed a day because of rain.

AHS players bring home 3 state tennis medals

Perseverance was a key factor as three of four Albany entries in the Class 2A state tennis tournament brought home medals last week. Three-time qualifiers Luke Marshall and Sidney Russell completed their careers in singles Wednesday-Thursday, May 15-16 at Blossom Tennis CenterinSanAntonio.Marshall placed second in boys singles for the second year in a row, while Russell earned bronze after first-round exits the last two years.

Local softball teams compete in tournaments

Two Albany softball teamscompetedintournaments over the weekend with the 12U Lady Lions finishing second at the District 11 tournament, while the 8U Red Thunder hostedafundraisingevent. At the District 11 tourney, a 16-team doubleelimination event played Friday-Sunday,May17-19 at Abilene, the Lady Lions went 4-2, coming out of the losers’bracket to reach the championship round.

Little Leaguers continue play

Albany Little League concluded its regular season last week with two final games rescheduled because of weather. The Reds won the Majors championship with a perfect 12-0 record.

Chapman picked for all-star game

Albany’s Tyler Chapman has been selected to playinthe2024TexasHigh School Baseball Coaches AssociationAll-Star game. Chapman was picked for the North team for the Class 2A-4A game, scheduled for Saturday, June 15 at Round Rock’s Dell Diamond.

Albany to face Hawley in quarterfinals

The Albany Lions overcame one rough inning to sweep their Class 2A area baseball playoff series against Eldorado last week, sending the Lions to the third round for the ninth season in a row. Albany (19-2) will take on District 8-2A rival Hawley in the regional quarterfinals at McMurry’sWaltDriggersField, which is hosting another series this weekend.

Tennis team dominates at regional, sends 6 to state

Albany entries dominated the Region II-2Atennis tournament last week, winning four of five draws to qualify for state. The Class 2A state tournament will be played Thursday-Friday, May 16-17 at Blossom Tennis Center in San Antonio.

Memorial awards given

♦ Arecap ofAlbany High’s athletic success during the 2023-2024 school year was given at the annual Athletic Banquet on Monday, including the announcement of several special memorial awards. Coaches for each sport also recognized their teams, along with handing out various sport-specific awards.

Free physicals to be offered

TheAlbanyIndependent School District is offering physicalexamsforstudents planning to participate in junior high and high school activities during the 202425 school year. Athletic director Ryder Peacock said exams will start at 4:00 p.m.
