Tennis teams sharpen skills ahead of district

Albany High School tennis players continue to prepare for the district meet later this month by participating in area tournaments, many of their opponents from larger schools.

All of the AHS athletes are competing at the varsity level, and coach M.J. Reneau intends for that to be the plan at the District 10-2A tournament at Rose Park Tennis Center in Abilene Monday and Tuesday, April 21-22.

The Albany Lions had a win-loss split last week as they work through the first half of the district baseball schedule.

They were on the road Tuesday night, facing Hawley, but will be back in town on Friday, April 4 to host Haskell for a 5:00 p.m. start. Next Tuesday, April 8, the Lions will end the first half with a home game against Anson.

As of Tuesday’s press deadline, the Lions hold a 4-3-3 overall record and are 2-2 in district.

Lady Lions face tough test, rebound with big home win

Last week’s softball games against district opponents ended up about as coach Jimmy Fuentes expected, with an 0-18 loss to district leader Stamford and a 11-0 win over Abilene TLCA.

Albany hosted both games – Stamford on Tuesday, March 25 and TLCA on Friday. The Friday evening game signaled the start of the second half of district play.

Junior high teams finish strong at district track meet

Albany’s junior high track teams wrapped up their seasons at the district meet in Cisco on March 29 with standout efforts from both the girls and boys.

For the Lady Cubs, both the seventh and eighth grade girls teams finished as runner-up in the overall standings.

“That was huge to see, just with our numbers and the relays,” said girls coach Lauren Peacock. “We had three relays in both divisions, and it’s been a while since we’ve been able to put those numbers on the track.”

Alban Lions and Lady Lions track and field athletes returned from spring break to compete Thursday, March 20 at the Haskell Indian Relays.

Albany will host the Roarin’ Lion Relays on Thursday, March 27 (today) in its final outing before the District 10-2A meet on Wednesday, April 2 at Cisco.

Cubs, Lady Cubs take the track in Albany

Albany Junior High Cubs and Lady Cubs track teams used their home meet Friday, March 21as their final tuneup before district competition.

The junior high district meet is Saturday, March 29 at Cisco. Field events start at 9:00 a.m. with running events starting at 1:00 p.m.

The Albany meet was a ribbon meet with no team scoring kept. Boys coach Ryder Peacock said the main goal was to get back in competition mode before district.

Lions win Jim Ned Invitational golf tournament

The Albany Lions boys golf team endured difficult conditions and a strong field Wednesday, March 19 to with the team title at the Jim Ned Invitational played at Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird.

Albany golfers made their final outing before the district tournament this week at Haskell. Myleigh Leveridge played Monday, March 24 in the girls division with the boys teams and medalists playing Tuesday, March 25. Results will be reported next week.

Lady Lions drops district game at Anson

The Albany Lady Lions softball team battled Friday, March 21 in a 9-0 loss at Anson as pitcher Carisa Barrera returned to action after being struck in the face by a line drive against Hawley.

The Lady Lions (6-3 overall, 1-2 District 8-2A) hosted Stamford on Tuesday, March 25. Results will be reported next week. Albany begins the second round of the district schedule at 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 28 when Abilene TLCA visits.

Albany anglers complete season at Lake Brownwood

Albany FFA members Jacob Knight and Brycen Turnbow wrapped up their season in the Texas High School Bass Association on Saturday, March 22 with the final West Division tournament at Lake Brownwood.

The duo caught several fish but did not submit them for weigh-in. The event drew 145 anglers, more than half of whom did not report a catch.

Knight and Turnbow were responsible for their own fundraising and lined up several sponsors, according to Albany FFA advisor Chris Beard.
