A blood drive is scheduled to take place in Albany this afternoon, Nov. 7, and Hendrick Regional Blood Center (formerly Meek Blood Center) will park its bloodmobile at First Baptist Church from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
Blood drives in Albany have been sponsored by the Kiwanis Club for over 20 years.
The blood center depends on volunteer blood donors to supply 100 percent of the blood that is used for patient care at 17 area hospitals.

The filing period for the March 2020 primary elections officially starts this weekend on Saturday, Nov. 9, but since the Shackelford County Courthouse is closed through Veterans Day on Monday, Nov. 11, the first day that candidates can actually sign up is Nov. 12.
Republican county chair Lynne Teinert plans to be at the Courthouse on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 1:00 p.m. to help sign up candidates for the Republican primary.

A large troupe of local junior high thespians are rehearsing for the upcoming University Interscholastic League one-act play competition that will be held in Albany on Thursday, Nov. 14.
“We are performing A Christmas Carol Adapted by Jerome McDonough,” said director Melanie Turner. “Rehearsals are going well.”
McDonough’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic tale uses simple staging and costumes, and is written for a large cast.

Many local FFA and 4-H members are already busy preparing for the upcoming stock show season by validating, feeding, and training show animals, participating in fundraisers, and making sure that their entry paperwork is turned in.

All 4-H and FFA youth who plan to exhibit an animal at any major stock shows or the county show need to turn in their registration information to Albany ag instructor Chris Beard by tomorrow, Nov. 8.

An Albany company vehicle and a local man were involved in an Interstate 20 accident near “Ranger Hill” in Eastland County that killed a Breckenridge man on Monday, Oct. 24 about 3:15 p.m.
Christopher Lawren Whitehead, 45, of Breckenridge was pronounced dead at the scene after the pickup he was driving hydroplaned on the wet roadway, crossed the median, and struck a truck and trailer.
Brandon Roysdon of Albany, who was a passenger in the pickup, was treated and released from Eastland Memorial Hospital.
It’s time to fall back! Daylight Savings Time comes to an end on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2:00 a.m. Clocks should be set back an hour at that time.
Most of the United States reverts to standard time on the first Sunday in November. In the U.S., each time zone switches at a different time.
Through 2006, Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. ended a few days before Halloween, Oct. 31. Children’s pedestrian deaths were found to be four times higher on Halloween than on any other night of the year.

Beverly Rogers of Albany was once again honored as a top individual fundraiser and also as a member of one of the top fundraising teams at the Walk to End Alzheimer’s annual fundraiser held at Abilene’s Rose Park on Saturday, Sept. 14.
The Abilene event is sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association-North Central Texas Chapter.
Rogers and fellow Team Albany team Randy Hayes were both given recognition awards during the chapter’s event wrap-up party held at Miguel’s Mex Tex Cafe in Abilene last Thursday, Oct. 24.

Shackelford County commissioners approved this year’s commitment to fund the county-wide contract with AirMedCare and decided to obtain a courthouse security assessment during their regular meeting on Monday, Oct. 28.
They also approved a resolution for a Hazard Mitigation Plan update.
Air Ambulance
The membership agreement with AirMedCare, the air ambulance network that serves Shackelford County, was ratified at an cost of $12,000 to the county.

Local veterans will be honored guests at the seventh annual Albany Study Club Veterans Day Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 14, and committee chairman Tammy Glover wants to make sure that everyone notes that the event will be back at the Old Jail Art Center this year.
“We are having the luncheon at 12:00 noon on Nov. 14 in the big room at the Old Jail Art Center,” said Glover. “The luncheon is open to all local veterans and their spouses. Even if a veteran is now deceased, their surviving spouse is welcome to join us.”
