The camera system approved two weeks ago by the Shackelford County commissioners for the Law Enforcement Center has been installed, it was reported Monday at the most recent meeting.

County judge John Viertel said that since the last session, Big Country Surveillance of Hawley had gotten the system operational in the juvenile interview room, where a camera is now required by the state, as well as in the room where DWIs are processed.

The quote for a little under $3,500 is expected to be the final price, Viertel said.

Members of Jesus of Nazareth Catholic Church will hold a fish fry fundraiser Friday, March 3 at the Albany Youth Center.

Organizer Jeff Bezner said food will be served beginning at 5:00 p.m. and continue until either suplies or demand runs out.

Donations will be accepted in lieu of a set price.

“We do have a suggested price of about $10,” Bezner said.

Service is takeout only. The menu will include fish and sides such as beans, cole slaw, potato salad, and hush puppies. Dessert, mainly cookies or brownies, is also available.

For Moran’s Samantha Hinkle, being a good citizen is an outgrowth of being a good Christian.

Hinkle, along with Albany’s Presley Green, received the Good Citizen award last month from the Lee’s Legion Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Hinkle has served as a counselor at church camp and was named a youth leader in her church.

“I get to help grow and create young Christians in this day and age, and just overall mentor them into being good people in our society,” Hinkle wrote in her DAR application.

Several FCCLA members will compete at the Regional Leadership Conference in Waco Friday and Saturday, including two Parlimentary Procedure teams and several other individuals and pairs.

The Level 1 Parliamentary Procedure team, which consists of all eighth graders, is scheduled to compete at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The Level II Parlimentary Procedure team, which can include both ninth and 10th graders, will enter its contest at 3:10 p.m. on Friday.

The public is invited to a local performance of “Oz” on Monday, March 6 at the high school auditorium, but be careful about following the yellow brick road to view the play.

The curtain will go up at 6:30 p.m. for a free public performance of the high school’s one act play in preparation for the UIL District OAP competition on Wednesday, March 8 in Haskell.

Moran’s One Act Play qualified for bi-district competition Monday, Feb. 27 with its performance of “Little Women” at the District 13-1A contest at Abilene Wylie High School.

The bi-district competition, which will include six schools from Districts 13 and 14, is scheduled for Monday, March 20 at McMurry University in Abilene.

Moran’s specific placing at the district contest was not announced, just that it was among the three advancing schools.

One-year contract extensions were approved for principals Glen Hill at Albany Junior/Senior High School and John Gallagher at Nancy Smith Elementary School, with any salary increases contingent on the 2023-2024 budget and relevant action taken during the upcoming state legislative session.

District level positions will be discussed next month and the rest of the staff in April, according to AISD superintendent Jonathan Scott.

Members of the Shackelford County Hospital District’s board of directors heard a concern from a Moran citizen during Monday’s regular meeting, then worked through the rest of the agenda fairly quickly, including a brief closed session

During the public forum portion of the meeting, Christina Zinn of Moran asked if there could be a backup plan for pharmacy closure, stating that it had been a hardship on several older Moran citizens when Sanders Drug Store was closed because of the weather earlier this month.

The call is being sounded for any members of the community who would like to be part of the 85th anniversary edition of the Fort Griffin Fandangle to come to rehearsals.

The first rehearsal of the season is set for Monday, Feb. 27 at the Aztec Theater starting at 7:30 p.m.

“Everyone is welcome to come be a part of the show,” artistic director Lorna Ayers said. “And it’s not all about being able to sing. We have many things for people to do in addition to singing. If you want to be in the show, we will find you a spot.”
