Softball team wins season opener

The Lady Lion softball team took the field for the first game this season on Tuesday, hosting Breckenridge at Webb City Park.

The Albany girls won the opener 7-5, even though several local starters didn’t play due to the basketball playoffs.

Albany will be on the road Friday and Saturday at the Eastland tournament. The Lady Lions are scheduled to play at 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Friday, followed by games at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Coach Jimmy Fuentes reports that he has 18 players on the roster so far, with new players showing up just this week.

Youth teams finish at tournaments

The seven local teams of Little Dribblers played their first sets of games last Saturday, Feb. 9, in Albany, while the fifth and sixth grade youth teams finished out their season playing in tournaments in Clyde and Eula with mixed results.

The fifth grade boys won their first game 39-9 over Clyde #2.

Moran basketball season ends

Moran’s basketball season ended Monday night when the Bulldogs lost their final district game of the season 49 to 54 in Ranger.

Eula, 25-6 on the season and 9-0 in district, with one game remaining as of press time, is the 1A District 20 champion. 

Lady Bulldogs

The Lady Bulldogs’ season ended last Tuesday with a 12-80 loss in Strawn.

The varsity girls posted a 2-21 season showing and were 0-10 in district.

The Moran junior high boys played their last game of the season last Monday, Feb. 4.

Lady Lions shock #3 Haskell

The Lady Lion basketball team ended the regular season at home Tuesday with a big upset over Haskell, handing the Maidens, ranked third in the state, their only district loss.

Albany fought throughout the game and ended up with a big 37-32 win, electrifying a home crowd at the AHS gym. The Haskell girls have lost only one other game the entire season.

Fight For First

The Lion basketball team dropped to second place in the district standings due to a pair of district losses in the last week but still have a shot at the district title.

Now 8-2 in District 8-2A action, Albany lost in Hawley last Friday and were surprised with a 41-40 loss at home on Tuesday to Haskell. Details will be reported next week.

With just two games remaining in the regular season, the Lions will host Cross Plains on Friday starting at 5:00 p.m. with the JV. The varsity will take the floor at 6:30 p.m.

Junior high teams split final games against Roscoe

The Cubs and Lady Cubs ended the season with a set of games against Roscoe on Monday, with the boys winning their games while the girls lost.

The Lady Cubs also played in the Stamford tournament on Saturday with mixed results.

The boys closed out the season on a positive note, bringing home three victories.

The eighth graders earned a 50-17 win on Monday.

Moran boys to finish season Tuesday

Three of Moran’s basketball teams completed their seasons this week with final games for the junior high players on Monday, Feb. 4, and on Tuesday, Feb. 4 for the girls varsity team.

The Bulldogs still have two district games left, and they will play in Gordon tomorrow, Feb. 8, at 7:30 p.m. and at 8:00 p.m. in Ranger next Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Bulldogs to host Eula

Both junior high basketball teams were able to put a tally or two in the win column this week, though the varsity teams did not fare as well.

The varsity teams were scheduled to play in Baird on Tuesday, Jan. 29. Results were not available at press time.

Upcoming Games

The Eula Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in Moran on Friday, Feb. 1 for games starting at 6:30 p.m.

Moran varsity teams travel to Strawn for the Lady Bulldogs’ last game of the season at 6:00 p.m. followed by the boys match at 7:00 p.m.

AHS athletes earn post-season honors

Three senior Albany -Lions have been named to the football All-Big Country Super Team, also winning Class 2A honors along with several other members of the 2018 squad.

Senior Ryan Hill was voted both the Super Team and Class 2A Defensive MVP, as well as first and second team picks on both offense and defense. Hill was a two-way winner on the Super Team with first team defensive lineman and second team tight end honors. He also was named to the Class 2A first team as tight end and lineman.

Albany girls hold on to 2nd

The Lady Lion basketball team came up just a little short against Stamford last Friday, falling 45-42 in the final minute or two to end up tied with the Lady Bulldogs for second place in the district race.

Albany traveled to Roscoe on Tuesday, staying in contention for second after a tight 33-31 win with two regular season games remaining.

The Lady Lions will be on the road again Friday against Hawley. The JV will start at 4:00 p.m. in Hawley, with the varsity girls tipping off at 6:30 p.m.
