Albany High School athlete Wesley Estridge is off to a strong start in powerlifting this season.

Estridge traveled to Brownwood on Thursday, Jan. 21 to compete in his second powerlifting competition of the year.

Estridge had a successful meet, placing first individually in the competition and hitting his all-time best in deadlift.

The Albany senior squatted 650 pounds, benched 385 pounds, and dead-lifted 500 pounds for a total of 1,535 points.

His total weight increased by 70 pounds, up from 1,465 last week in Jacksboro.

Estridge did attempt 700 pounds in squat, but was unable to get it racked.

Last year, Estridge’s squat at regionals was 710.

Estridge is currently ranked first in the Super Heavy Weight (SHW) division, which is any weight above 275 pounds. The powerlifter also is ranked first in the region and fifth in the state.

Estridge will next compete in Snyder on Thursday, Jan. 28.
