Albany fire department elects new officers
Members of the Albany VolunteerFireDepartment elected three new officers during a regular meeting on Monday night, April 1. Fire Chief Joel Viertel explained that there are alternating terms for the seven officer positions similar tocitycouncilseats,with three positions up this year.

New retirement plan approved
SCHD directors move to TCDRS A lengthy discussion and then a decision regarding the employees’retirementprogram was the main topic at Monday’s meeting of the Shackelford County Hospital District’s board of directors. Arepresentative of the Texas CountyandDistrictRetirement System had presented a couple of plan options at the February meeting, but the directors stopped short of approving the proposal until they had more feedback from district employees.
Band earns I in sight reading
The Ragin’Red Band earned a Division II rating in concert and a Division I in sight reading on Tuesday, narrowly missing a third consecutive Sweepstakes Award. “The kids played well, but we were after the big schools this year instead of playing before them, which may have made a little difference,” director William Vaughan said.
$ 250,000 grant to bump up SO salaries
Shackelford County judge John Viertel announced to commissioners at their March 25 meeting that $250,000 in funding from the state’s Rural Sheriff’s Department Salary Assistance Grant Programhadbeenreceived and was being placed in a separate account for proper distribution and documentation.

Moran Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30 at the Moran city park.
Fandangle rehearsals move outside
April 20th Sampler Rehearsals for the 2024 edition of the FortGriffin Fandangle moved outside this week at the Prairie Theater and will continue a twice-a-week schedule until the Membership Sampler set for Saturday, April 20. Practices are being held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting at 6:30 p.m.
Exhibitors wrap up show season
Albany FFA members wrapped up their winter showseasonlastweekwith several chapter members exhibiting animal projects at the Star of Texas Rodeo Austin Livestock Show. Five local students earned places in the barrow show.
