Denson said the board, which oversaw the Masonic Home and School of Texas until its closure in 2005, provides services to families in need.

“They fund dental work and the Fantastic Teeth program, which dispenses toothbrushes in schools,” Denson said. “They give scholarships, assist widows and orphans, and also have an autism education program for the parents of autistic children.”

Winter storm closes schools, offices

By Melinda L. Lucas

Shackelford County residents, as did the rest of the state, had plenty of warning before this week’s winter storm moved through the area, and for the most part, there were fewer problems than during the 2021 “deep freeze” that occurred at almost exactly the same time of the year.

There was also a winter storm in early February 2022, very similar to this year’s event.

Albany Chest gives $46,650 to applicants

By Melinda L. Lucas

Even though the Albany Chest fell short of its $47,000 goal by $5,000, the board gave away well over that amount at a brief meeting on Jan. 25.

The 2022 campaign was closed out last week at $42,003, but with reserves in the account, the board ended up allocating just under the goal amount.

When the directors met back in October 2022, they came up with a total of $46,650 for the 25 applicants, with many of the requests trimmed back from the original grand total of $55,078.
