Seniors face full schedule of events

A whirlwind of activities is about to begin as members of the Albany High School Class of 2024 face a busy May schedule, ending with commencement exercises on May 24. Photographs have already been turned in for the senior slide show, and one baby picture per senior should also be delivered to the Albany News for the annualgraduationsection.

Fandangle practice to start May 13

Rehearsals for the four summer performances of the Fort Griffin Fandangle will start on Monday, May 13 with a new practice schedule that should be easier on performers this season. According to Fandangle artistic director Lorna Ayers, the rehearsals will be different this year than in the past.

The City of Albany is gearing up for summer fun with the hiring of a new pool manager and several lifeguards for the upcoming season. The pool will open on Saturday, June 1 with Splash Day.

Johnnie Leon Barnett, 77, of Lueders was arrested on Monday, April 15 and charged with two counts of attempted capital murder, about three weeks after he allegedly tried to hit Shackelford County sheriff Ed Miller with his vehicle and then rammed a deputy’s vehicle.

Fandangle Sampler moved to Whitney

Due to a day of rain, the annual MembershipSamplerand dinner for the Fort Griffin Fandangle Association was moved indoors to the Whitney Theatre in Albany last Saturday. While the crowd of members and guests may have been slightly smaller than planned, the success of the “members only” preview of the 86th anniversary of the Fandangle was not dampened, according to organizers.

Board election underway at school

In-person early voting for the May 4 Albany Independent School District trustee election started Monday, April 22, with 54 ballots already cast by midday on Tuesday, according to early voting clerk Lynsi Musselman. Early voting will continue through Tuesday, April 30 at the Albany ISD administration building just south of the band hall on the secondary campus.
