Commodities to be distributed

Pick-up dates for the September distribution of the commodity food program are Sept. 6 and Sept. 7.

Thursday, Sept. 6, certified eligible families in Moran should pick up their monthly commodity food at the Moran City Hall between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon.

Albany families who have been certified eligible for the September food distribution program can pick up their commodity food Friday, Sept. 7, at the rear door of the Justice of the Peace office (former county jail) from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Lee sisters earn Tech degrees

Albany sisters Lexie and Molly Lee both graduated from Texas Tech University during ceremonies held in Lubbock last month.

Lexie earned a bachelor of science from Tech’s College of Agriculture with an agribusiness and applied economics degree, as well as a bachelor of arts in general business from Rawls College of Business.

Molly graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in human sciences with concentrations in Addictive Disorders & Recovery Studies and Human Development & Family Studies.

Dove prospects may improve

Pickup trucks were parked in front of every door of the Hereford Motel last Saturday night, most of them undoubtedly owned by some of the many dove hunters that flocked to Shackelford County for the opening weekend of dove season, normally the best bird hunting time of the year. 

The hunters were here, right on schedule, and provided their typical boost to the local economy, according to business owners.

“It was great, and we were busy,” said Prairie Star owner Treca Edington. “There were a lot of folks in town. We were very pleased!”

Star-Spangled Guests

Eight members of the Houston Grand Opera Studio sing the Star Spangled Banner to open the 2018 football season at Nail Stadium last Friday night. The group was in town for an annual retreat at Stasney’s Cook Ranch.

Rain delays Labor Day golf event

The team of Barton and Hughes won the Championship Flight at the annual Albany Labor Day Golf Tournament with a two day total of 124 strokes, followed by Mitchell and Holson in second with 130, and Echols and Echols with a score of 136 for third place.

Sixty-eight players, grouped into 34 teams of two players each, ended up competing in the tournament after six of the 40 teams originally registered for the event had to cancel due to various last minute conflicts. 

Scores from Saturday’s rounds were used to divide the teams into four flights on Sunday.

Community prayer meeting set

The First Baptist Church in Moran is hosting a community prayer meeting on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 5:00 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to come and join in prayers for the community of Moran, including the school, teachers, students, and individual needs.

The church is located at 616 Post Oak Street.

AVFD plans fundraiser Saturday

The opening day of dove season is typically busy around Albany, and members of the Albany Volunteer Fire Department have decided to take advantage of the increased activity by hosting a fundraising luncheon at the fire station, located at 609 Railroad Street.

“Come one, come all to our hamburger lunch!” chief Kyle Tischler said. “Hunters and Albany folks are all welcome!” 

Serving will begin at 11:00 a.m. and is expected to end around 1:30 p.m.

The meal costs $7 and includes a hamburger, chips, and drink.

Kindred food drive gets underway

Staff members from the Kindred Home Health office in Albany are gathering food donations as part of the company’s 14th Annual Food Drive.

Local employees, along with those around the country, have placed food collection bags at various locations in their respective communities and are collecting their “harvest.” 

5th quarter fellowship set Friday

Area churches will once again host the successful and popular after-game fellowships following each of the Albany Lions’ home football games for 2018, according to Brad McBee, president of the Albany Ministerial Alliance.

The first “Fifth Quarter” event of the season will be held Friday, Aug. 31 at The Feed Store and will be hosted by Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church and Trinity Lutheran Church.

Chick-fil-A, desserts, and drinks will be served at tomorrow’s event, according to MMPC minister Anthony Ceder.

Mission team to help with Reyes home

First Baptist Church members have often traveled for hours, driving or flying out of state or even out of the country on mission projects, but this fall they have chosen to work on a project much closer to home, just a few blocks east of the sanctuary.

Tricia and J.R. Reyes’ uninsured home burned to the ground in July, and the new structure that they moved in to replace the house is a small storage building that will need a lot of work to become a comfortable home, so Lori Schooler and the FBC mission team decided to help out.
